The Phoenix New Times has a nice seven page article about DDR. It's good to see DDR get this much (positive) attention. The article contains several interviews with local Phoenix players, including one with our very own SW mod, Jason Salaz..

Excellent read, I'm surprised it was such a lengthy post though about Southwest Showdown, rather than the same introductory articles we're all used to reading. Great article though. E1.gif

Quote:
Fittingly, when JSB finally does arrive, he enters the noisy arcade like rock royalty. A cover-boy handsome teen (and he knows it: "I have a 9.5 rating on facethejury.com," he boasts in his online LiveJournal, referring to the current teen hotness-meter site), Sheridan strides in with flagrant bravado, trailed by his homies from San Pedro and, after them, the procession of Arizona fans who've gathered in the parking lot.

He's barely old enough to drive, unemployed, and his only marketable skill seems to be that he's really, really good at a particular arcade game.

Even so, John Sheridan has clearly got life pwned.

I want to shake that reporter's hand, it definitly was written well. Definitly exploits the lives of the arcade addicts, and how crazy tournaments can get when you throw one big name into the hat.

The Article wrote:

Jason Salaz, who, besides moderating the Southwest discussion forums on DDRFreak, also works on the Web site for Orange Lounge Radio, a Live360 Internet radio station completely dedicated to the music of DDR and other beat-related games from the Bemani division of Komani of Japan, says the one-and-a-half-minute dance tunes on the games' soundtracks become your favorite jams, regardless of what you listened to before.

There's a lot of things I dislike about this article, those two things in particular make me giggle most.

I couldn't stop laughing through this entire article! I'm sure some people will be offended since they're the ones being laughed at but I hope they laugh too.

In this article, it showed a picture of Jack "The Sketch". I entered a tournament that he held at the Metro Center Mall in Phoenix, AZ. I had no idea I would see him in a news article...... I was very surprised, and I'm glad that I was able to enter his tournament. Due to how the condition of the DDR machine was, I did not get to play any of the newer songs from DDR Extreme, it was DDR Max2. I can't say wether i could have gotten a higher rank in this tournament say the machine wasn't so inaccurate and it was DDR Extreme, but i enjoyed this tournament and it allowed me to compare how good i have become compared to other players there. As far as I remember, it was a Score attack and I didn't seem to be hitting the arrows hard enough, at that arcade it seemed like you had to stomp or the machine wouldn't read that you hit the arrow. Jack is a great DDR player in my opinion, and if I do accel enough i would like to challenge him again someday to see if i can surpass him. If anyone wanted to know, I got 3rd at this tournament in Pheonix. As far as I remember he has a name at this site, if anyone knows what it is, can they notify me of it? Thanks alot and I hope what I said is worth reading to other DDR players.

Sadly I think this article might hurt DDR among some demographs of potential players. John's actions during that tournament were an extremlely bad example to set of DDR players.

Better than making them look like total losers that spend 100% of their time @ the arcade.

With Johnny being portrayed as more of a character, it makes DDR players seem more human. At least I think so.

Agreed, it is better then looking like total losers, but we have people with character that arn't quite as bad as John. And I'm sure some of them were at the tournament too. My only complaint would be that John is a very polarizing character and right now its bad for DDR to get anybody alienated if we want it to become more profitable for Konami to make new mixes.

Agreed!!!! E4.gif

Plus, if that was a pych-out tactic I think it was brilliantly played.

I don't know about everyone else but I abosolutely loved JSB's attitude. I'd probably would be just like him if I were the king of the hill. But he speaks the truth nonetheless. E7.gif

I wouldn't go around worshipping him, but I can't help but love his attitude. I think his attitude is why I wouldn't mind hanging around him.

Plus, the part about nobody over 25 playing the game was a flat out lie. I'm living proof of that. Only a bunch of teens playing. How Ridiculous!!! disgust.gif

As well as completely unnecessary. It's not as if there was a chance he was going to lose that match. I'd have been far more impressed and amused if instead he asked to grab Jaime's crotch before the final match.
