I just got back from my local Zero Gravity arcade (Galaxy Arcade) and while I was there some guy wanted to face me. Now when I play, I play for fun. Others try to beat others with steps. I have the best looking dancing there. So he wants to face me on heavy. So I'm like ok, and I tell him I don't play heavy because it isn't fun. So he's all into it, 8 feet, and i'm just dancing, I look back see a poopy load of people and then ... he falls. Right off the stage! I couldn't stop laughing. Almost all the people who were watching laugh. I say to my friends "Who falls off the stage?", and the guy is like "I'm use to that side." So we fail and I walk away while he's all like, "Rematch!" I talk to some people who DDR and they said that guy was good at heavy but he looks stupid doing it and he was an bumhole. Anyone ever have this happen to them? And my final question is why do you play? Fun? Style? or to be the best? _________________

From what I see at my arcade people play to show the people who have no idea what the game is and are walking by a entertainment. Basically the people who are good will pick a song they are really good at to impress a crowd and just do it for the people watching basically showing off their skills. Not much competitors at my arcade since they neevr want to versus unless it's their friend. So yeah, that's what I think most people DDR for at least here.. |

I'm not going to be the best, I have no style, so obviously my answer would be "fun"
But in general, every arcade has player(s) like the one you described... those who use the game as a means of validating their self-worth. But you'll also find every other sort of player as well. You just need to steer clear of the morons. |

I play for fun and because I have nothing better to do with my time and money. I don't usually look at the other person's score when I play with someone, because I don't honestly care how they did compared to me. I'm not much of a competitor in anything, DDR included. _________________

Well, I do play for fun. Friendly competition doesn't hurt. But I don't know if I'm an alien from outer space or something, but it seems like nobody plays with altruistic motives. Let me explain myself...
All I see on DDR internet boards is scores/grade/performance comparison. All about competition. All about who's the best. Whatever happenned to cooperation? And by that, I don't mean the usual advice you can get on the forums about "haow i ken pass max300". No, I mean like taking a lower-level player under your wing, and basically training him. Acting as a mentor. I didn't see much people talking about how fun it was to show the ropes to... let's say, their cousin. Only thing close I saw is a guy berating his brother because the kid was proud of his D on Cowgirl. Not much cooperation there, I see...
Well, I do play for altruistic motives. Helping people can be fun, and the satisfaction you get from doing that is even better than passing any song, no matter how uber hard they are.
But hey... that's just me... _________________

I know how you feel about taking a new player in and teaching them. I've done this with my stepbrother. in two or three months, he's already stepped up to heavy mode on some songs, standard on most, and a few still on light. It's good to have a little healthy, friendly competition now. |

It helps me forget about the crappiness of the real world, sorta like a drug. Some people have pills, some people have heroin, and uh...I have a metal stomping block. _________________

I've done that a lot. At the arcade I go to, there aren't really any DDR regulars other than myself, so most of the people playing are completely new to the game. I've taught a bunch of people little tips that you might not think about right off the bat (like the fact that the grey arrows flash in time to the beat), and helped people pass their first few songs. It's a lot of fun.
Maybe that's why everybody thinks I work at the arcade. o__o _________________

I play to gain more muscle on my legs and to improve on my coordination. I don't look for competition, it comes to me ~_~. _________________

well I look stupid when I mlay and I'm not good enough to beat anyone so I gotta play for fun. I also play because it is something that is active to do so I don't grow up to be fat. Not that I need to loose weight since I'm almost the lightest players in my area. _________________
