I've been working on a few SM files for non-DDR songs and the biggest roadblock I've run into so far is getting the BPM right, does anyone know of a good (ideally free, I'm a cheapo E15.gif ) program or technique for getting the BPM right?

And it's a little off-topic, but are there any good (also free) programs for editting songs (to cut down a 4 minute song to the usual 1.5 minute DDR song length)?

Load it through DOS, as it says in the read me. It's a tough one to figure out, but all it does is make steps, you want to get the BPM (winBPM for me...)

For syncing a non-dance song
It probably does not have a constant BPM
So, you'll have to change the BPM all the time to ensure syncing
When you have a section that fits great and then later some of it is too fast obviously you have to increase your BPM and the same if it is too slow.
I recomend using the Stepmania editor, place the arrow speed on 3X and the song speed on .7X to help notice when arrows are offbeat and use the assist tick.

Yeah, finally got Dancing Monkeys to work. If anything I can take the BPM on the step files they create and use it for my own.

As for songs with changing tempo...I'm still avoiding them at this point riiight.gif

DM does find the BPM, and the GAP. How else do you think the .dwi file it creates is usable? All you have to do is open it up in Notepad and look at it. disturb.gif

One note about DM, though: it won't work well with songs that have live drummers, as their timing isn't nearly as good to work with as synthesized music, and it also won't work well with tempochangers; you'll have to pick those apart yourself to find the individual BPMs.

Yeah, tried to do TANK! (opening song from Cowboy Bebop), didn't work.
