Did Konami overspend on licensed songs (for DDR)?

It's my observation, just to begin with.

BeForU was easily the heart and soul of DDR, until someone in Konami thought that it's a threat to the current structure (read: Konami's blatant overfunding of IIDX/pop'n).

To answer that question, you'd have to know how much they spent.

And overall, I'd say probably not. Personally, I tend to be a fan of KOs more than licenses, but songs like Butterfly, Captain Jack and The Whistle Song play a huge part in defining the series, especially for new and casual players. If licensing music wasn't financially beneficial, they wouldn't have done it for 8+ mixes. Trust me, they have accountants to figure this stuff out.
