OK, well I normally play DDR with 2 other friends.

One of my friends is always asking me stuff like "Who's better" and I normally don't know how to answer.

I am told that I am the best out of us 3, but I don't know how that can be judged.

Obviously, someone who can AA PSMO is better than someone who just started, but how would you compare people to one another that are close in skill?

For instance, me and my 2 friends:

Me:
3 10 footers, all in the arcade
I combo or near combo almost every song I play, even if it's the first time
I don't have a lot of stamina
I play a lot of different songs and like to try new stuff

Freind 1:
2 arcade 10 footers, 2 that hes only passed on a home version (max and maxx)
he barely ever gets a combo over 100 and ive even seen him fail some very very easy songs
plays very few different songs, mostly ones that ive only played once or twice, but can still beat him at

Friend 2:
1 10 footer, period
Is good at a few songs, and likes to try new ones
incredible at reading, he can AA bag 1x, but only on stepmania, which is what he is better at

see, i dont get how to compare the 3 of us since we play different songs and stuff and were all better at different parts of the game?

anyone have a way of comparing peoples skills?

That sounds like a good idea, actually.

Except for that we can't pass LoM. lol

What about if you're just watching two other people play though? Is there really a way to determine who is better?

if you cant do LoM try Paranoia Survivor that song has got me up in the ranks at my arcade i am 4th ranked.... What has me better is that i only use the bar for a short period of time as of PS i go 1/4 of the way and stop using the bar on Max 300 i use it after the freeze. and if you cant do Max 300 on PS try and memorize LoM steps on the step chart

I'm only better for the sake of not having to use the bar for hard songs, but using the bar also hinders me so maybe I'm inflexible.

To answer the topic's question, I'd say "You're better when you stop caring if you're better". Why? Well, it seems like lots of people have quite an elitistic viewpoint of what a "good" ddr player is. I mean, I remember reading stuff like (quotes are not exact, sue me):

Attention Craver wrote:
Well, you're STARTING to get good if you can AA 9-footers

Hence bringing someone telling him:
Other guy wrote:
Geez, where do you play? Yasu's house?

So if you end up asking people's opinion on how good is a "good" DDR player, I think you'll be very disappointed (not to mention discouraged) on those people's expectations.

But in my view, I'd say someone's good if they've learn DDR's essentials, and if they can apply it decently... say like when you can read some hi-end light / mild standards...

I mean, no need to put anyone down because they're not on heavy yet...

Usually, I just go by whoever has more AA's and AAA's.

Despite you saying that you're each good at a certain part of the game, it seems like you rule over your friends by quite a margin. While Friend #2 is good at sight-reading on StepMania, the real money-maker is your performance on an arcade pad.

Yeah, I'd have to say that out of the three of you, you're easily on top.

you are good if you
1. think you are at least can pass a 8 decently or so
2. dont complain about not being able to pass a song or ask if it can be done
3. dont rape the bar its a crime

what i would suggest is that you keep a record of what songs you have passed, grade, best combo, and most perfects. i actually do this to see how well i progress in ddr

That's not really the question...and there was no reason to bring up bar-raping...period disturb.gif .

I think actually you can answer the question "who is better" with "it depends on what you're talking about." My friend can PA hard 9s better than I can, but I can PA everything else better, and I do better on the 10s. So it really depends.

Whoever gets the most Perfects wins. Any song, any modifyers, and any difficulty. Sudden Death style rounds. E1.gif

Even if you get like (take for instance):

Person 1: 480 perfects on LoM
Person 2: 480 perfects on LoM

Person 1: 13 greats, 4 boos, 3 misses, 2 NGs
Person 2: Full Combo, held all freezes.

Person 1: It was lucky that he got that low of greats, and he can never FC the song.
Person 2: Full combos the song constantly, and gets around 20 every time, if not less.

That still makes person 1 better? I never understood the "All perfects = automatically better player" rule. Unless one has 2 greats and the other person has a AAA on a song. (And they are both constant with the low great counts.)

They had the same amount of Perfects... wouldn't that make player 2 better?

Remember..its not always about who's better or not, but having fun mostly. Although we all want to know how we rank against people in our arcade or area of play. I am currently battleing with one player in particular. He gets about 20 less greats on easier songs and i get about 20 less on harder songs. He hasn't passed but 2 (10s) and I've passed 4, but you can't say that makes me better, for the fact that he is better at easier songs.

10's are no big deal they just require more stamina and faster feet...you shouldnt judge how good you are based on that but ask yourself does it really matter who's better just have fun playing
