In beginner and light mode you will always feel like you're stepping on the beat. Generally speaking, the tougher modes are on the beat as well, but there are some exceptions... sections where the steps syncopate off the beat, or parts that don't quite feel in sync, or parts that just feel awkward... but you won't have to worry about those for a while.

Yes, the arrows follow the (drum) beat, the vocal melody, the music melodies, and/or the timing.

(why would anyone who hasnt played the game yet, join a DDR forum page.....?)

It's the easiest way to find out information from the experts. However I did mention that my board is on its way from CF.

Hey, if he's got the cash to spend, why not go for the best straight out of the gate? I sure would have. Besides, if he and his wife decide they don't like it that much, I'm sure he can still make a good majority of his money back selling the pads (or just take a hit and sell them to me for cheap laugh.gif ).

Well, its not that easy. I do have the cash, I am buying two. However, the reality of the situation is:

1. I don't like to fuss or mess with stuff..I like my things to last.

2. After reading about all the board options, emailing them and getting responses...as big as I am 6'3 320 (ex amature power-lifter) everything kept pointing back to the CF.

3. I don't have a choice I HAVE to exercise now that I am done with the wieghts and getting older I HAVE to take care of my heart...and I HATE cardio machines...so I chose this.

But thanks to you guys for the answers and questions. I appriciate the reception!

Welcome to DDR!

Yes, most of the time arrows have SOMETHING to do with the song; almost always on the lower two difficulty levels. When you get to Heavy mode, things can get pretty crazy, but you'll always be able to find some connection between the music and the arrows. Except for the craziest songs out there... those are just insane.

The best cardio workout from DDR comes when you get to the higher Standard/all Heavy songs. Then, I could go out on a limb, and venture to say it is a better workout than any cardio machine.

Let us know how it works out for you!

The trick to Public playing, really is to Get good at home, and as you feel more confident in your abilities you go to the arcade. The pads are usually Very Comfortable to use, you can have a support bar, and genrally the song selection is MUCH better than the home games (Unless you want to get a JPS2, and the JDDR Games).

I myself play at heavy, and learned to do that by doing the above, Heavy and standard songs are a better workout definately, but also are much harder, and with some songs Like: Bag, Max300, Legend of Maxx, and Paranoia Surviovr Max, you may not be able to beat those for quite some time (I still have only passed Bag and Sakura, both only availabe with arcade play).

In short, Welcome to ddr, and Just ignore the people Talking trash about ya, Enjoy the forum biggrin.gif

that's kinda like the purpose of the game. To step to the beat of the song. So ya, they follow the song. On the harder songs, the beat can be faster or more bizarre, but it usually still follows it.

although Basic(light) and trick(standard) do follow the beats just like the hardest difficulty, the hardest difficulty, maniac(heavy) is the most fun. it follows the music co much better and its so much more fun to move to. i recomend never using the little difficulty modifer as it does take away from the fun(i've never used it myself, but i've seen others use it and its horrible how the songs steps get murdered by the modifier).

The game helps you a bit to "visualize" the rhythm by using spacing. You can tell quarter steps, eighth steps, and sixteenth steps apart by the distance between the moving arrows.

Another thing is the color. On Light/Basic, most or all the arrows will be the same color, because they are all on the downbeats. When you get to songs that have eighth beat steps, you'll notice some of the arrows are different colors. This signifies steps on the upbeats. There are yet more colors to signify sixteenth beats. This is most notable on gallops.

in short...
arrows in succession of same color or somewhat close= quarter beats
arrows in succession of different colors or close together=eighth notes
even more different colors or very close together=sixteenth notes

The "Flat" mod makes all the colors the same, no matter what, making it harder to read and forcing you to rely on spacing, while "Solo" makes the difference in color easier to read.

Another thing, on triplet steps, it's easier to read them by their spacing than by color.

I think triplet steps are impossible to read by neither color nor spacing. It's the music that makes them work for me.

I would say that even the hardest songs go with the beat, with maybe two exceptions (*cough* Graduistic Cyber *cough*). The arrows may not follow the main beat, but they do follow A beat (sometimes it's to the secondary background music beat, or something else).

Suffice to say, for me, playing DDR would be VERY heard without sound. I'm a pretty big ear player, so I rely on the beat to help me out.

Happy DDRing!
