USB PS2 Controller question

instead of buying a PS2/USB converter:

If i were to build a metal pad from a usb game pad, is there a way to play it on the ps2 using the usb slots on the PS2?

i just want to be able to play my created songs and steps on stepmania but use the same pad for DDR without that converter.

Is 2 separate control boxes really the only way to accomplish this?

Nope. The PS2 does not normally recognize USB gamepads.

Just make seperate control boxes if you really need to avoid a PSX -> USB converter... I'd just get a PSX -> USB conveter though.
