I'm just 14 but a little overweight (I definitley wear a husky... but am no means obese). I LOVE DDR!!! And in terms of looks I have lots of potential, just need to tone up and loose some chub, most of it will come off as a I grow (my brothers were similar) but I think that DDR would really speed things up. And coincedentaly today is the start of Yom Kippur (A jewish holiday where we are supposed to fast, and being a Rabbi's kid I'm of course fasting), I thought when Yom Kippur is over would be an amazing time to start doing this... I'd say I need to lose about 20-40 pounds (depending how I grow). I do have a few questions though... Should I play DDR MAX or Stepmania, If I play DDR Max should I play on diet mode or regular arcade, I can play about 5 step standards (like breakdown) and get a B... do you think it would be a good time for me to start from the top on lite and try and get A's on everything (so set a goal for myself). Thanx for ur help in advance and wish me good luck!
PS. I should also add I have DDR Max for PS2 (with the basic songs of course) but on StepMania I have 386 songs (almost everysong), if that affects ur decision for me. IM SOOO TORN. I mean with DDR Max I get the 104 inch screen and atmosphere of my home theatre, but with StepMania I get the songs and the comfortness of my own room, but playing DDR upstairs makes the whole house shake. AHH!!! I guesse it comes down to this, how much of a difference does workout mode make? |

Copy-paste is my FRIEND today!!
// I posted this awhile ago in a thread on DDR and losing weight.
----------
Each of these elements comes into play with weight loss.
One. Your weight now, relative to your frame size and height. If you currently are underweight, then you're not going to lose weight as easily. If you're extremely (unhealthily) underweight, DDR is liable to cause you to *gain* weight. If you're an average weight, DDR may make you lose or gain, depending on other factors. If you're overweight, DDR may help you lose, but at the same time, other elements of your lifestyle are gonna come into play.
Keep in mind most of the people who lose weight off of DDR start off quite overweight-- the average/underweight person is much less likely to have dramatic weightloss with DDR, and may even gain.
Two. Your diet. What you eat now. What you eat while you're trying to lose weight. Diet is vitally important in relation to exercise-- if you DDR an hour a day, but eat totally horrible food, you're liable to not lose, or even gain, weight. At the same time, following unhealthy diets can make you lethargic, and make you not have enough energy to even do cardio. Also, it's important to note that if you change back to eating the Standard American Diet after your weight loss attempt, you're liable to gain most if not all of what you lost back.
Speaking of the standard American diet, if you're trying to lose weight, you may want to look at what you're eating. The food guide pyramid is a nice idea, but hardly anyone follows it-- and in fact, there are major flaws to it. The numbers of servings are accurate (for someone active trying to maintain weight), but they're inequal-- you should learn what a serving of fruit is, a serving of grains is, a serving of meat is. Having a snack every day is fine, but realize that a serving of fats/oils/sweets is around 2 ounces of chips or pretzels, and your average bag of cheetos is SEVERAL servings.
Americans generally get too much protein, too many grains, too many fats and sweets, and not enough fruits and veggies. So you might wanna evaluate your diet. You don't have to become vegetarian to be eating better-- simply watching your portion sizes and grabbing an apple instead of poptarts when you're on the run goes a long, long way.
Three. Water. You *will not* lose anything but water weight unless you keep completely hydrated. Your body needs water to break down fats, and fat loss or fat being replaced by muscle is what you're going for, right? You don't just wanna be dehydrated.
Four. Your current workout. If you already do cardio for the same amount of time you're planning to do DDR, you have changed basically nothing. In fact, I've heard of a bunch of people who've gained off of DDR-- I can't say that hanging out at arcades really breeds good eating habits, for sure.
They say the best workout plan is one that you can stick to-- after all, it's pretty worthless to lose from working out an exhorbitant amount, since you'll end up gaining it back (gradually, granted) whenever you give up on running twenty miles a day, or whatever over-the-top thing it was. Variety's supposed to be good as well, and taking every other day off for muscles to repair themselves.

Hopefully some of that is useful. Peace out. _________________

you have a 104-inch screen tv?!?!
well, i've been playing since the end of july, but on the weekends (i don't own any ddr game, except for SM on my pc, but i play with my fingers ) and SOMETIMES during the week if i'm lucky to get my hands on a copy or to the arcade, and i've lost 11 pounds since then.
i never have played workout mode, and i guess that is only useful if you actually count how many calories you've gained and you want to make sure you want to lose em all and stuff.
i'd reccommend getting A's and AA's on all the light songs (excluding the 2-4 footers), then moving on to standard, etc. a good way to make the transition is to play the game in Training mode, that helps alot.
i also stopped eating breakfast in the morning since i started DDR, i guess that also took part in my weight loss, so i guess your fasting would have the same effect.

i was overweight when i started DDR. the reason why you gain weight is because the workout worksout you calves. therefore muscle is greater than wieght, it weighs more. thats why it seems you gain weight. _________________

|
|
Try These Suggestions on your Diet Program:
1. NO SNACKING between meals! It disrupts the digestive system.
2. Walk for about 15 minutes after every meal; it gets the digestive system going.
3. Walk for about 60 minutes a day. That will help you on controlling your weight.
4. Eat 2 servings of fruit a day, none after breakfast.
5. WHOLE PLANT FOODS EATEN WHOLE!
Hope this helps; will try to get you more tips next time. Please reply, over! Thanks!

Woah woah woah!! Screw the DDR diet, tell me how I can get a 104inch big screen for free!
It's strange too, because the largest big screen in production is a 72" by Pioneer, you must've gotten a projection rig. FOR FREE!!!!
Oh yeah... Diet, uh. Eat less. _________________

I was like 137lbs and 5'6" before ddr. I made up my own diet to see how it would work with exercise, and now i;m 5'8" and 128
what i did was i only ate when i was hungry. not like "oh this would taste good right now," or "ooo i want one of those!" but it also means you dont have to be starving to eat. i do give myself a little treat every once-in-a-while, like when we eat italian food, it's just too darn good to not finish it... try this and tell me how it works for u
note: this only works if you have a little thing called " SELF CONTROL
(disclaimer: i am not responsible for some kind of starvation problem that you lead urslef to in this diet i made up.. you are choosing to do this at your own risk.) _________________

I don't really think he meant to be disrespectful or rude, maybe he just didn't know what Make A Wish is. I'm sorry about your brother, I hope he can get through this.
Back on topic: another thing that might help you is adding some resistance (weight) training 2-3 times a week. It'll help you add muscle mass and keep your metabolism high, so you'll burn fat quicker. Oh, and one more thing (a very important one), consult a doctor before starting any kind of diet or exercise program, especially if you have or had health problems. Good luck. _________________
