By that, I mean which song best illustrates it's rating?

I see topics like "what is the hardest 8 footer?" all the time, but I have yet to see a topic about this so here goes...

Personally, I have always felt that Era is an excelent example of an 8.

It's patterns are challenging, but not too hard (i.e. no double stepping, or crazy turning) and it requires a good bit of stamina too.

It is the "average" 8, IMO. Not too easy for an 8 like Holic, not too hard for an 8 like Witch Doctor; the epitome of average.

As for the 9's I'll say Paranioa Rebirth is a good 9. Complex turning and a great number of steps make it a good example of a 9.

Anyway, what are your thoughts about this?

Nice idea.

I've always thought SSLM was a fairly good 9.

I'll also post what these song teach newbies while I'm at it....

1 Footer: Firefly (Yes, even "Remember you" is too easy for 1 foot, teaches the basics of staying in rhythm.)
2 Footer: Eversnow (Teaches Basic flow and Freeze arrows)
3 Footer: Candy[Heart] (Teaches newbs those "tricky" corner jumps)
4 Footer: Breakdown (Teaches Steps during freezes)
5 Footer: Long Train Runnin' (Teaches off-beat steps/jumps)
6 Footer: Heaven is a '57 Metallic Gray (Teaches timing triplets and erratic tempo changes)
7 Footer: Cartoon Heroes (Teaches higher tempo 8th steps and jump stacks. Nice stamina builder)
8 Footer: Ska a go go (Theaches extended 8th step runs, pivot runs and extended 16th runs. Great stamina builder)
9 footer: Breakdown (Again) (Teaches advanced spinning and advanced steps during freeze arrows. Also a great stamina builder)
Also for 9 feet: Tsugaru/Matsuri Japan (Teach consistant gallops and coping with chaos)
10 Footer: bag (Crash course in arrow sex, Chaos, erratic rhythms and inconsistant gallops)

Now for ones that are not true!

1 Footer: Gambol (First time playing? Avoid this one footer like the plague! Crash course in 1/4th streams [for newbs] I say 2 Feet)
2 Footer: um...I'll get back to you on this one.
3 Footer: Ditto...
4 Footer: Witch Doctor (Crash course in Jump/Freeze and Step-jump...5 feet)
5 Footer: After the Game of Love (It just feels so...6 footerish)
6 Footer: Ska a go go (Too easy for 6 feet...5 feet)
7 Footer: Secret Rendezvous (Yeah...maybe on 2x. I say 8)
8 Footer: Daikenkai (This applies to Heavy and Challenge Singles and Doubles. 9 feet..all of them...end of story!)
9 footer: Cartoon Heroes (Look at the stepchart yourself! 10 feet!!!)
10 Footer: Genom Screams (And the "most totally overrated by 2 whole feet" award goes to... OK, so the beginning is a crapheap. But the rest is a freaking breeze...)

I agree with Brigg on most...I won't spend a lot of time on every foot rating E4.gif :

My Generation I think is a perfect 6...it's fairly simple, and it teaches very simple gallops.

Burnin' the Floor is a pretty good 7...it has a whole bunch of really good chains of 8th notes, and the section in the middle that just straight follows the music is certainly a perfect example of what steps start to do in heavy songs.

I agree with era as the best 8...I still haven't been able to FC that song because of the stomps in the really long 8th note run at the end, but it definitely has perfect steps for an 8.

Matsuri is by far the best 9...it has gallops and long 8th note streams, but it's not just insane like So Deep, or Xenon, or Cartoon Heroes...::shivers::

Personally I think that MAX 300 and Para Survivor are the best 10s. Bag is different from all the rest, Sakura is too easy, and MU, LoM, PSM, and PSMO are definitely on the harder side of the moon.

I think once you get up to the harder levels, you'd have to start separating it into types of steps, like gallops, stream, chaos, whatever.

Sure, R&P is a good example of crossovers and gallops, but HV:AM is a good example of constant stream and double stepping. They're both good 9s, but emphasize different things.

Hmm, I think I would EOTC instead of HVAM, I find HVAM to be a much harder 9.

As for Chaos, Rain of Sorrow is a well placed 9, so is Tears. I feel should probably be an 8, and L'amour an easier 9.

Then there is the Freeze where only a few songs come in. Kiss Kiss Kiss should be a 9. Ordinary World is a hard 7 if you don't know how to do it. Justify My Love is a good 9, including the MSL type section and the forced Freeze arrows.

I dunno about what a good example of certain foot ratings is, but I know a few that are misplaced:

D2R Standard: NOT a five-foot. I remember when I was desperately trying to pass my first six foot and no way in hell could I have done that

So Deep Heavy: I think during beta testing this was a 10. That was a good call, they should have left it like that. The rhytm is, ok it's really really offbeat but it repeats like a drumbeat once you get the hang of it. But it just doesn't let up and the arrows still come at what feels like lightning speed. That and the broad strokes are always the same, but there's always the odd variation thrown in here and there to trip you up.

Not sure what makes a good 8 foot... I suppose Love Shine is ok, as it's the first eight that I passed, although I suppose bar raping half of it and then collapsing on the floor afterwards is hardly anything to be proud of E13.gif It's a good fairly high energy song. That or Still In My Heart Momo Mix; some tricky reading in the slowdown and advanced streaming at the start. I can't really say much more because those are the only two 8-foots I've passed E13.gif (My comments on So Deep are based on my Stepmania experiences)

Eh, I think it's a bit easy as an 8, but certainly not a 7.

i always thought of insertion being the perfect 9 footer. tempo changes, gallops, 16th note runs, 8th note runs, and odd step patters, it has a little bit of everything.

oh yeah, and everyone always forgets that the least 100 seconds is an 8. it should soooo be a 9, PA wise and "omg this song is hard to pass" wise. a good 8 footer would be i guess paranioa 180, cause i cant think of anything else and it was the original hardest song in the game back when there were no 9 footers.
