I don't know if anyone else has experienced a very BIG lag between clicking a thread and loading a page. But it's gotten to the point where IE will sit there for almost 3 minutes still waiting for the page to load.

I use both IE and Mozilla 1.4, and am on a DSL connection. I also have this problem when loading up the board on the University of Utah's computers.

Sometimes, I will get the ad-flow error saying that it could not connect or something, but that rarely happens.

Here's a ping I did from the University of Utah last night around 8:30 PM:
Quote:

PING ddrfreak.com (38.112.128.116) from XXXXXXXXXXX : 56(84) bytes of data.

It seems sparitic... if I spelled that right. biggrin.gif It only happens sometimes, like right now the boards load up just fine and quick. Is this a problem with lots of connections at once???

There is your problem right there. Peak hours where people visit the site make it slow. That's as extensive as my information goes.

Several days ago, at 3 in the morning, it took me 10 minutes to open up the reply box and another 10 to submit it to a thread. Not a lot of people from the UofU visit DDRfreak, and from what I know, the connection there is quite fast, so that can't be the reason :-\

It doesn't matter how many from UU visit, the number of people on DDRFReak is huge at 8:30. Try pinging again at, say, 3:30 in the morning. I'm sure you'll get a much better result.

I already posted a thread about this that was ignored by the admins. Just learn to deal with it, I guess.

Perhaps you should demand a refund.

I say we just drop the issue and learn to deal with it. Spike and company always responded with saucy comments when asked about this in months past, and now admins just completely ignore questions about server speed. Sounds a bit like the step charts and the videos, eh? Oh well. We'll live.

i could deal with the slow speed if i didnt have to load a page up to 2 or 3 times because of that fucking broken ad bullshit. i made a thread about it in site feedback and it seems no one is paying attention to that either.

I wanna complain too! biggrin.gif

Well, this forum isn't out to make money so having a fast server isn't a big deal. If eBay was like this, it would cost them millions. They're down about 2 hours a week (?) for maintenance and almost always fast - yet they're bombarded with requests compared to here.

I'm wondering (and I'm sure it's been asked before) what sort of server runs this forum? I imagine it's a single overworked machine whose hard drive light never stops flickerin'. Nobody plays games or anything on it which can contribute to slowness, do they?

Probably adding to the problem: When there's several threads I want to read, sometimes I right-click and "open in new window" each one so I won't have to wait forever to switch topics. The first one that shows up is where I begin to read.

That said, I appreciate the time and money that has gone into making and keeping this board alive. Thanks.

I would really like to make the server faster too... if it were as simple a solution as throwing money for hardware I'd do it. Currently the server is a 4 way xeon with 1 GB of ram and SCSI RAID5 storage. I suspect the search feature is slowing down the server, and I am willing to take it away (or at least make it harder to get to) if it'll make the server faster, and people are willing to try it out.

I'm for it. Just on a trial basis, at first, I guess.

I don't know about others, but I rarely (if ever) use the search function. I think the search function can be sacrificed for the speed of the site.

Ehh, it seems to be running at good speeds now. I don't see any reason to change anything.

Right this second it's fine because the load on the server is low. When peak hours hit, the boards have been slowing to the crawl and the only logical reason is because of how many requests the servers is handling at any point in time.

I understand that, but 2 days ago it was crawling at even this hour.

So long as I can still search my old posts, I'm fine.
