For those of us unable to import a WonderSwan for Beatmania, there seems to be only three choices for a music game on the GBA...
1. Britney's Dance Beat, with even less music choice than the console versions.
2. Importing DDR GBC, which has somewhat awkward controls (due to the GBC design).
3. The upcoming Space Channel 5 port.
Am I leaving anything out? I would like to see how SC5 stacks up against the Dreamcast version... The Chu Chu Rocket! port was excellent, after all. (Admittedly, I haven't really gotten into the Dreamcast SC5, except in store demos long ago - with the sound OFF. Bleh.)

There is also Beatmania on the GBC, I think there are 3 versions. BMGB. BMGB 2 and I thank there is an Anime one too.
Pop n' Music has also had a few incarnations on the GBC. Again I think there are 2 mixes plus the animelo tunes version.

So long as you get the pad adaptor you will have no problem with the controls. _________________

the pad isnt really an "adapter", its a snap on piece that fits over a GBC and has springs and levers connected to the arrows that push corrosponding buttons on the gbc. i have DDR GB, and its terrible. im not sure if its this way with others, but the buttons dont match up correctly. well all do, except for Left, which matches up with B (used for Right). and there is no way to change the controll scheme. anyway, beatmania on the other hand is really decently made for game boy, the controlls are a little more logical. if you can find it though (and i have never seen it) pop n music for GBC is also very good.
and for the record, britneys dance beat is the single worst gba game ever made. yes, i am classifying it as worse than mortal kombat advance _________________

Sound interesting; I think the beat/rhythm/music genre needs more GBA support, especially since the system can handle much better audio than the GBC ever could. And as for DDR GBC... well, good luck fitting the GameBoy *COLOR* snap-on onto the GameBoy *ADVANCE* (or SP)...
Also, has anyone worked with the excellent NeoGeo Pocket Color SNK vs. Capcom: Match Of The Millennium? A great game, and technically a fighting one, but among the minigames is a simple Bemani-style Cat Dance... Anyone tried this one? |

You are right, cfusionpm, about it not being an adaptor but I used that for lack of a better word. I have all the DDR's for GBC, yes I was mad enough to buy Disney and Oha I also have BM 1 and 2 and Pop n' Animelo. Of all of them Pop n' works the best.
The best thing about BM for GBC is that they did a GB mix for each song, I have not really played them all that much but a friend that really like BM says they are very good.
Pop 'n works really well on the SP, once you have a damn phones adaptor that is. Call me a freak but I really like to play it on widescreen mode.
As for Britneys Dance Beat, it really does suck however the worst game ever is any Mary-Kate and Ashley game. I would like to point out that I do not, will not and never have owned said Britney and MKA games. _________________

And the inevitable question: Best place to import GBC games?...
Also, do you think the music genre will grow on the GBA? |

yes! One of my favorite handheld games
my best score on Cat Walk = 100% on Chun-Li's stage...which is pretty much as high as it goes =X |

I've heard about a Neo Geo Pocket rhythm game called Cool Cool Jam. Supposedly it is linkable to the Dreamcast game Cool Cool Toon. Does anyone have some more information on these?
I agree there needs to be more rhythm games for the GBA. Something similar to Parappa or Frequency would be cool. Too bad those are both Sony games. _________________

The Cat-Walk mini-game is classic. My best score is still one note away from a 100% on Chun-Li's stage. Someday...
One of my friends has Cool Cool Toon for the NGPC. Apparantly each stage is a different 'instrument' that you play, and the story is you trying to 'get the band back together'. The controls are quite strange, and it's a really difficult game from what he says. _________________

Mary-Kate and Ashley Girls Night Out is actually a surprisingly good rhythm game considering the license it draws upon and the inherent limitations of the GBA platform. _________________

the full Konami bemani GBC list is:
DDR GB
DDR GB 2
DDR GB 3
DDR Oha GB
DDR Disney GB
Beatmania GB
Beatmania GB 2: Gatchamix
Beatmania Gatchamix 2
Pop'n Music GB
Pop'n Music Animelo GB
Pop'n Music Disney Tunes GB
I have all of them and I'd have to say that Beatmania Gatchamix 2 was definitely the best executed and featured the best gameplay. 2nd would be Pop'n Animelo GB because it's so damn close to the original full game. _________________

You're right about the MK&A game; according to the latest Nintendo Power, there is also a GBA title based on MGA's Bratz doll line featuring a dance-type theme; also, the Donkey Kong Country GBA title, in addition to the fishing minigame from the GBC title, will have some kind of dance minigame. Interesting. (This is neither here nor there, but if Sony's portable is successful, would they continue the Frequency/Amplitude series on it, or would the technology allow it?)

PS: Does the GBC DDR pad fit on the GBA or SP? |

not even close. it snaps directly on to a gbc, direct fit. gba and gbasp are totally different in shape. also it will not fit on a GB or a GB pocket. it fits directly on to a gbc and nothin else _________________

From what I hear... There seems to be a Beatmania-like game on Wario Ware, Inc.
*shrugs*
I have yet to find it but I'm only 10% through the game. _________________

Re: Wario Ware Inc.: I'm not sure about a Beatmania-type game; the closest I can find is a game where you try to clash cymbals to hit notes. So far, I've played all the minigames, and have the target score on Wario's Intro, Jimmy's, Mona's, and 9-Volt's games... |

Well Jet Grind Radio's being ported.
It may not exactly be a music game but it does have a lot of rhythm to it...
And I know for a fact that Wario Ware does NOT have a Bemani-style game in it. The only reference is 9-Volt playing Beatmania in his intro movie. |

Yeah, the Beatmania stuff is just the intro movie for 9-Volt, where he is playing something remarkably similar to 5-key.
There's a couple other music-related minigames on there besides the cymbals one; one where you're doing Simon-style dance moves (remember these button presses, then do them back in sequence), and another where you're making a funky little band play. _________________

It's been awhile since I posted on this topic... I do consider the Simon-type games in WarioWare to be more that than rhythm / reflex like the cymbals one.
I did just purchase Sonic Pinball Party at Target (which I understand has it as a store exclusive), and it's a pretty darn solid pinball title, with themes based on Sonic (naturally), NiGHTS, and Samba de Amigo. The latter (SdA, I mean) has a very simple minigame where you tap the left or right flipper buttons in time to the music and "rhythm balls" to "shake" the maracas... fun stuff. (For fans of the Dreamcast title, it does have many of the familiar tunes... even a Chu Chu Rocket! one.) |

I had the same problem with mine. Until I figured out what that little rectangular box with the kanji in it underneath the initial logo on the title screen was. If it says off, you aren't using the adapter. If you press right on the little crosspad or right on the adapter while it's on the gbc, it should say on and the buttons will match up correctly. _________________
