Ok so it looks like the BNS DX dance pad w/ xtreme dance inserts 3 in 1 is a good pad. It says it needs a controller adapter. This is what I don't get. Fill me in - with this we can use it with Step mania right? |

Could you give me a link to the pad you're looking at? _________________

I was more concerned about whether it has USB output. The OP said it was a 3 in 1, which suggests PS2/Xbox/USB output but also that it needs a controller adapter, which is why I'm curious. _________________

Hmm, I never noticed that before. That is sort of confusing. My best guess would be that the pad has one cord coming out of it, and comes with 3 things that can be plugged onto the end- a PS2 one (the default I'm guessing), an Xbox one, and a USB one. If you've ever seen an Xbox controller, you may notice that toward the end of the cord away from the controller, there is a place where it can come unplugged; so the part of it that goes into the Xbox controller port is it's own ~8 inch piece of cord. I'm guessing it's something like that, with interchangeable heads. I hope I'm making sense; if not, I'll try to draw a picture. _________________

You've been incredibly helpful Flamebait! So it's your best guess I should be able to buy that pad hook it up to my PC and it will work without buying anything else. Then I just have to figure out Stepmania. It looks like that has pretty detailed directions, but I'm not terribly computer savy. This is the first forum I've ever posted on! What a desperate mom will do!! Thanks again! |

StepMania is pretty easy to install; not really much harder than any other program. The tricky part is getting the songs + simfiles installed, but it's not too awful difficult. _________________

Getting simfiles onto StepMania is incredibly easy once you get your first one. www.DDRUK.com is probably the best place to get started because it doesn't have individual songs like most sites, it has song packs which can have up to 60 official DDR songs in them. |

Yeah, once you figure out how to do one, it's a cakewalk and DDRUKs packs do most of the work for you, all you have to do is save the pack in the correct directory (for me it's C:\Program Files\StepMania\Songs).
DarkCore: Are DDRUK's packs RARed? I haven't downloaded in them for months and I can't remember. _________________

I got this same pad a couple of weeks ago and I love it. I am very very happy with the quality. I didn't know what the controller adapter requirement meant either, so I also bought a used Playstation 2 on eBay.
I am going to get another pad for a youngster in my family whose mother doesn't want him to have a video game console. I'm glad I just read about downloading game packs for Stepmania. Sounds good. |

The Red Octane Ignition 3.0 pads have USB output on them, along with PS2 and Xbox adapters. It removes the hassle of a controller converter/adapter. _________________

I've heard that the BNS pads are just as good if not better than Ignition 3.0s. Plus I think we also figured out they have the same outputs as the Ignitions, and IIRC they're a bit cheaper (could be wrong on that though). _________________

OK then.
scpink: This means you will have to download a program called WinRAR if you do not already have it. Don't worry, it's free. _________________

I just did that - I'm feeling more confident already! I can't wait til the pad gets here! DDR sounds like so much fun and great exercise too. I have a feeling it won't just be my daughter using it! |

Well it's a pretty catchy thing going around. Everyone gets on it when you go on, so I wouldn't doubt it. Anyways, when the pad comes in, you'll have a bit of a time to configure it, but when u do it'll work nicely. But my Advice is, if you want a pad that will work for a lifetime, just get the metal pads. They'll last for eternity (From how I see it), and you'll get the feel for it when you, or your daughter, start playing in Tournaments and small little gaming competitions with friends and family. Trust me, it'll be worth it! _________________

Watch out, most metal pads are terrible. Blue Shark and Coblat Fluxes are good though. |
