ps2 ddr pad to PC?

well, I just got my ddr pad and connected to my pc...and is lagging like hell and i dunno why (im playing on stepmania 4.0 btw)...when i connect the ps2 controller to the adapter, it is perfectly fine when i use the buttons...but when i connect my ddr pad to the same adapter it laggggss like crazy in stepmania.... any idea how to fix it guys?

More details on your pad manufacturer/type, where you got it, where you got the adapter, what the name of the yadda yadda yadda is would probably help.
