I know that since I started playing DDR about 6 years ago, I have very rarely intentionally played a song twice in a row. Even when I've black flagged a song, or know I'm so close to getting a AAA, I usually won't play the song again immediately. I can count the number of times I've played a song twice in a row on one hand, and I don't think I've ever played the same song three times or more.
This is just the way I am. I suppose it's a matter of pride for myself. I want to know that I can get a score on a song (or pass it) without having to "whore it out". But what I think is kind of strange is that I don't have a problem with other people doing it (unless they waste an entire set playing one song while I'm waiting).
This is how I see it, and those are my vague reasons as to why I rarely (if ever) will play the same song twice. What are your preferences and thoughts on this matter? _________________

Well, if I am positive that I could have done the song way better then I'll do it again, but usually I'll play a different song and then go back to it. I don't like playing the same song many times in a row because then I simply start to hate the song. _________________

Almost exclusively in the arcade. One reason is that I've never liked having to re-adjust my play style to the timing windows from CS to AC versions of DDR. But more importantly, I hate the unlock systems they have in the recent DDR games and refuse to waste hours of my time playing Beginner and Easy mode to unlock my songs. _________________

Personally, I'm not a fan of song whoring.
I think that a person can improve on a song by playing other songs - I strongly advocate this and can prove it, because I don't play that way.
Song whoring to drop one great, to me, is a waste of time. You can play more difficult charts and raise your likelihood of a AAA without playing the same song over and over again.
I might play a song twice in a row to "get" a certain part, but I will only do that if I like the song, and I wanna figure out how the steps go - I rarely do this. Even if I really like a song (and know how the steps go), I will wait until my next set to play it again, just by virtue of mixing things up. |

i have had much success whoring songs into getting decent scores on them
for example: i played Holy Guacamole 17 times before i got over a 99 on it. while that is the most plays for one song normally if i play a song for a few times in a row i almost always do better because the step pattern and beat of the song is still in my head so i can easily remember what i did and where i screwed up so i can try to correct it. when i do get it the score is MUCH better then what it would have been had i just comer back to it later (i got 11 on HG when i did get the 99 and was getting like 15 or so before, i forget exactly) _________________

For some reason, I always try not to attempt the same song consecutively -- I guess I am afraid of the consequences of poor variety. A potential problem in attempting a song multiple times would be a fatigue effect, not to mention one might begin to suffer from satiation. Of course, results will vary depending on person and circumstances. I do feel free to retry after playing a different song, however, so it is possible for me to play the same song every other song (not quite like that, but you get the idea). _________________

I will play a song consecutive sometimes. My reasoning is sometimes a song has a slightly off sync issue and in order to adjust myself for playing to that offset, I have to play it several times. |

I don't like song-whoring. I first tried it when I got two Greats on AM-3P one night. I kept playing it constantly until the arcade closed, but I never managed to knock those last two Greats off. Two weeks later, AM-3P was the second song I played on my first set and I AAA'ed it.
I figure if a AAA wants to happen, it'll happen. There's no need to rush it. Not to mention, I can't imagine how annoying it must've been for other people in my arcade to hear AM-3P constantly for nearly two hours. _________________

Suko,
Ever since I joined DDRFreak, I learned the simple rule for improvement is to keep practicing. In order to practice, you need to repeatedly play the same song over and over to get better at it. Here's a news flash that I've learned is that the step charts for home console version of the song is the same as the arcade version of the song. Therefore, regardless of your "...timing windows..." issue, it sounds like you're basically not studying the song's step chart enough. It's going to be rather hard to study the song's step chart if you don't play the song over and over. Basically, you gotta open the textbook in order to study from it. This problem is probably going to continue to haunt you at the arcades which it sounds like it is.
It's your economic choice really. If you buy the home console version and practice at lot at home, after the cost of the game console, the dance pad, and the DDR game, there is no further additional cost except the electricity to run the console and television. However, if you're an arcade purist, then you're going to be paying for each and every set of songs which is approximately 3 songs per game. So the more you practice, the more it's going to cost you and there's going to come a point in time where it would have been cheaper to get the game console version instead of practicing by arcade.
Since you mention "...refuse to waste hours of my time playing Beginner and Easy mode to unlock my songs..." sounds like you're talking about the PS2 version. Well, as mentioned above, it's your choice to spend hours and hours at home at relatively lower cost or to waste a lot of money just so you can save time with the song unlocks. Speaking as a DDR Ultramixer, some songs can only be unlocked if you pass one song on all difficulty levels, some songs can only be unlocked if you earn an A on all difficulty levels, some songs can only be unlocked if you earn an AA on all difficulty levels, and some songs can only be unlocked if you earn an AAA. Well, in order to earn grades of pass, A, AA, or AAA on particular songs, it's just simply going to take a lot and lot of practicing the one song until a certain grade is achieved so that a song is unlocked. Only then can I even attempt to pass the unlocked song at the Light/Basic level. So instead of having a 'tude that Beginner and Easy levels are beneath you, take it for what it is and prove to your console that "Yes, I can pass at those levels." It may be ignorant but I understand that for the PS2 version, you only need to pass the song to unlock it, in other words earn a grade of D. In other words, in the famous words of Sergeant Hulka in the movie Stripes said "Suck up Francis."
So what I understand of your problem is that you'd like to figure out how to improve without practing the song over and over? If that's the case, it's probably not going to happen until you do practice the song over and over. Yes, there's probably going to be a certain degree of transferrable skills through sight reading but you have to also combine your sight reading skills with the knowledge and memorization of the step chart. As the theme song for the tv show "Married with Children" says "....you can't have one without the other...." _________________

I was in no way at all asking for "assistance" in how to improve. I was asking a questions to the community to start up some interesting conversations about a DDR topic. I simply wanted to know how others felt.
Zukin-Man, that is crazy. I can't imagine ever playing a song 1 set in a row, let alone an entire evening! XD
I'm glad to hear you eventually got the AAA though. This is how I work, too. Getting AAAs almost seems like fate, and that playing a song repeatedly rarely produces improved results for me. _________________

I don't own any home version.
And I'll never do the same song twice in a row, etc, in an arcade session. That's just boring. _________________

Keep practicing, keep practicing, keep practicing..
Easier said than done. It takes patience to practice. And practice for patience.
I don't play much anymore, but one day I decided to play just because.
I tried Pandemonium on Easy just because.
Yep, I got 99.08%. _________________

On occasion, if a song's really sticking in my head, I'll play it twice, but on different difficulties usually (like HVY-ONI), or on Shuffle/Mirror the second time. But not too often.
One thing that helps with timing is turning on handclaps in Training Mode, and then simply listening to the claps with the song. You can also see that one or two little parts that's usually holding you back from a AAA, and why that way.
I usually get on AAA-streaks when I can totally zone into the songs/game; like to the point where I can hear every little subtle detail of the songs, and pay attention to them. It's like -total- immersion - just me and the machine. I think I nailed a whopping 37 IN ONE DAY that way! (Most of them 7-8 footers - ABSOLUTE and TRIP MACHINE -luv mix- probably being the most surprising of them.) I also SDG'ed the IIDX BOSS Oni Course that day, too. But then, I don't get that way very often, anymore! |

I was actually counting for a while, and Living In America was actually above 40 attempts.
And that was in the time period of less than three days.
I distinctly remember Chris Case looking at me in disgust during that period. |
