Ive been playing ddr for about a year and half now, and ive gotton ok at it, i can get my share of AAs and such. but ive never really played beatmania or IIDX before, and i was thinking of getting into it. i have a modded ps2 so i can play import games. Any suggestions on a good mix and a good price for a IIDX controller? _________________

I started with Happy Sky; Red is also a really really good mix.
Here's a US KOC for $25 shipping incl. _________________

I'd suggest getting the US version so you get both the game AND a controller. It's great, since it's lasted the US, RED, Happy Sky, & DistorteD.
For import, I'd say either Happy Sky or DistorteD. |

I agree, get the US version first so you have a good controler. For imports though, DistorteD has the best timing in my opinion, and Happy Sky just seems a little late on some songs. Overall, I like both songlists. DistorteD has a lot of songs I like, but Happy Sky has a few songs I love (and a really pretty interface). IIDX RED has a nice songlist, but it's a really tough mix and you'll probably find the level 6 to 7 transition a huge stumbling block. If I had to recommend, I'd say you should go with DistorteD, and if you like it, get Happy Sky. |

IIRC it's significantly cheaper now if you can find it. And yeah, get BM US for cheap if you can find it, but it blows donkey balls. But if it comes with a controller it's worth it. _________________

i bought my BM US for $60 last year and i think you can find it for around $30 now, that is if you can find it offline. Like it has been said, the music list is terrible, but there are a few good songs such as Colors and V. Not to mention the US controller is better than the japanese one because it doesnt seem to have the sticky keys problem _________________

either way you still need to mod it and V is on way too many styles to count as a selling point _________________

Amazingly, V ISN'T on DistorteD (And RED!). Maybe finally Konami is listening to us that we DON'T want V on every single Style. Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if it was revived for Gold (though I'd love to see a "vote for the revivals" thing).
RED is harder than the HS & DD, so I'd suggest getting one of those 1st. |

sometimes the US controllers crap out for no reason for a little while. The turntable is a bit stiff and, IMO the turntable is inconviently placed.
Whenever I strike the turntable, my pinky hits the sticker in the middle, preventing it from spinning, thus registering. _________________

It's annoying as hell, but only takes a few seconds to fix. |

Go w/ what everybody says. But as for the controllers, if you want to get the real feel of the arcade w/o goin' through Konami's ASC, here's the best suggestion:

Heh that's the truth...I own 6th Style and up, and am pretty surprised it wasn't on IIDX RED, and then yet again on DistorteD.
I learned how to play from 6th Style, a while ago. Of course, from a technical standpoint, 6th is pretty inferior compared to Happy Sky and DistorteD, but I really liked it's Drill Mode it had, it helped me learn how to do certain patterns more easily. But the later versions have pretty diverse and bigger songlists, I've seen some great easy stuff that's fun, with DistorteD and Happy Sky having a better timing window than most. They also have more of an emphasis on the insane songs (like Mei wtf). IIDX is hard, frustratingly hard, but worth the money you spend on it. If you can save money and get the controller with a US bundle then go for it, because the regular retail price of a Konami controller is about $65 or so. |

US was my first one but i really leared on red (unless you count playing core remix 2 at my arcade)
and remember folks you used to not be able to spell revival without V but now you need an A _________________

i was simply pointing out that V is one of the few good songs on BM US. You know, its not bad for learning if you dont have a modded or jp ps2. Hell, i learned on BM US, but now i only play JP styles _________________
