| Don't take my word for it, but I think it might be a certain percentage of the way through the song because I just played a couple songs and I got a gold combo after a different amount of steps for each song. I'm not sure if it is a ratio to the number of steps in the song or just the length of the song in general though. |

I'm pretty sure that the gold/blue combo comes up around 20%

Oh, I know that. When I say 20% of the arrows I mean the first 20%, not 20% in general. |

If you get a fantastic on the first note of "All Your Base Are Belong To Us" you'll start with a blue combo. The song starts with a little monologue, so i assume it's 20% or the SONG, not the notes.

The gold/blue is designed to tell you you're on your way to a full excellent/fantastic combo.
It might be a while before I get a **** because that blue combo would make me too nervous... I've had two blue combos so far, one only ended up an S+ but the other I went on to *** with exactly 99.00%. Nonetheless, nervousness may have played a part in my first excellent on that run. |

I'm with you there. Even when playing on keyboard, I rarely get blue combos, so it's hard to maintain that focus level to remain consistent.
Also, on some machines, although not many, there are those special Green Combos, which tells you that you have a Full Great Combo going on. :3 |
