It's okay. Here's the general rundown.
A "stage" is made primarily of 4 parts:
-The MUSIC (typically MP3 or OGG format)
-The STEPCHART (DWI or SM files)
-The BANNER (a 256x80 picture that displays in the corner during song select)
-The BACKGROUND (usually a 320x240 or 640x480 picture that appears on the screen during a song)
Sometimes, the additional files are used:
-A VIDEO (usually in AVI format)
-Timed Karaoke-style LYRICS (a LRC file, which displays words on the screen as a song plays)
The music just "plays", the BG/Banner are just displayed. The real work is in the STEPCHART.
The stepchart defines what the song is called in the game, who the artist displayed is, and other important values like:
-The tempo (speed) at which the arrows move (IE: trying to match pace with the music file)
-A "GAP" value to line up beats, in case the music has blank space, if the arrows "wait" before scrolling, OR if the MUSIC waits to play AFTER the arrows begin to move up the screen
-The step sequences themselves
-Whenever a song's tempo changes, or the arrows freeze in place
The programs simply display the pictures, lyrics, video, play the music, and play out the "stepchart" through a DDR-similar, changable interface. All the scoring, lifebar-adjusting, and timing is judged by referencing the stepchart.
Many players "trim down" songs like in DDR/BEMANI games, to have a "proper length" (newer ones usually average about 2:00 apiece now), though some chart out the entire song, or use audio-editors to mix in effects and insturments to "remix" a song they like.
Tools like a metronome, or a program like "WinBPM" are used to time a song's pacing (tap a key per beat for a minute, and it will give you an approximate BPM value) to plug into the stepchart file. From there, you can create stepcharts through an interface program (similar to DDR's Edit Mode), or by typing out lines on a DWI file.
Usually, it takes a few playthroughs/adjustments to make a song "time" just right. Some, like simfiles for INSERTiON and MAXX UNLIMITED have taken WEEKS to create accurately! And some just drop right into place, no problems. Songs are funny like that.
If you're planning to make some, keep this in mind: The first few ALWAYS suck. EVERYBODY screws them up. The people that are good at making them now? Them too, they just don't release the broken ones. What makes them GOOD at it, is the fact that much like the skill in -PLAYING- DDR, you just don't give up! |
