DDR is awesome, but many people think its lame, or it turns away would-be players. I think these are soem reasons:
1. most DDR players are n00bs and look idiotic
2. Things like Bella Dancerella (all of them), the DDR plug and play for kids, and ZTwister Dance Moves make it look idiotic.
Post somemore! We need people to realize DDR isnt stupid! |

When I was at Six Flags a few weeks ago, there was a kid (probably about 8-10 years old) and his sister playing on Beginner on the Extreme machine. On every step, he was lifting his feet about 2 feet off the pad and stomping. On jumps, he jumped as high as he could and pounded down on the pad with all his weight. It was one of the most ridiculous-looking things I've ever seen. I wish I could've gotten it on video. When people see someone playing like that on a DDR machine, it doesn't make a good impression.
Also, bar-rapers give DDR a bad rep. I'm NOT saying that bar-raping is bad. At all. What I'm saying is that a person playing no-bar and moving fluidly looks a lot better (and is more likely to draw a crowd) than a person clinging tensely to the bar. _________________

Unfortunately, freestyle gives DDR a bad reputation. The concept of the game is lost within that type of game play. Sure, it could be viewed as more difficult (having to hit arrows, while doing a 'dance' performance). But even the best freestyle isn't showing people how to play the game.
The fact that we sweat when we finish playing is also fairly unattractive. The fact that the new players to the game are over-excited when people ask about the game who don't know anything about it. Then the people asking questions think this is a cult. _________________

Maybe so, but I wouldn't say it gives DDR a bad rep. Freestyle, when done well, looks pretty awesome. _________________

I will not deny it can look awesome. I'm saying the way to understand how to play the game isn't through watching freestyle. _________________

But failing to teach people how to play and giving DDR a bad reputation aren't the same thing. In general, I think you could say that things that look stupid (sweating, stomping, etc.) give DDR a bad reputation, and things that look cool give DDR a good reputation. _________________

I've come across several people who thought that. _________________

One huge reason is that the word "Dance" is in the title. Some ignorant losers think its gay because a guy would have to play a video game by"dancing". It may not be common in places, but I see that ALOT and its really getting on my nerves.
I actually knew this one guy who thought it was "gay and stupid", then I went and showed him how fun the game is by playing some light songs and he was like "Hey get off lemme try!". I couldn't help but rub it in his face.
People need to play the game to understand how good it really is. |

Yes, it's a way of playing. I know this but, someone who has seen it for the first time will have no clue what is going on. Haven't you seen those idiots at the arcade that do jumping jacks on the pad during the demo music? It's because they can't figure out how to play.

I think this post is totally unrelated to the actual thread.
mainly because you're just pointing out what pisses you off about DDR players and things like 'someone who wont give another dance game a chance' or 'arrow smashing' doesnt give the game a bad reputation, people are not gonna go "OMG im not gonna play that game because the kid smashing on the arrows!"
Things that DO give it a bad rep, like someone else mentioned, is the people who say the game is stupid because they would be emparased by dancing on a machine (basically because they would suck at it), my point is, people make fun or reject the unfamiliar, when this game first came out people thought "a game were you have to dance" was very stupid mainly because it was something they had never seen before.
Other things that may give the game a bad rep is the fact that people relate it to "Gay-Dancing" due to some songs like the techno and happy hardcore genres, and it's colorful themes (paraparaparadise anyone?) so of course people would reject that and not play the game, it's basically because of what people who dont undrestand it say just to look cool.
That's my two cents. _________________

Well, no one else has said it, so I will. One thing that turns off a lot of the general public is that too often, the people playing look like thugs or creepy goths. _________________
