I wasn't sure if I could post this on the consoles section so I just came here to be safe.
Some time ago while researching console DDR games, while discussing it with some people it was mentioned that a PS1 game existed that was very similar to DDR, but unique to the fact that it was designed to produce random stepcharts to whatever audio CD you put into your PS1 after loading the game.
Does such a thing actually exist, and if so, where can I find it, if at all possible? I've had some pretty crazy ideas for DDR and want to try them out.

At a anime convention I went to I bought a psone import game called Dance! Dance! Dance! It's by Konami and I believe it was made before the DDR series started. It's like Bust A Groove except..well..everything good Bust A Groove excelled in, DDD! failed. You can use your own audio CDs however for music.
Konami also made another game called GOO GOO SOUNDY for psone that made step charts to your audio cds. Maybe that's the one you are talking about. However, I wouldnt know where to find it. Sorry.  |

That does sound precisely like what I heard about. I know it's rare, but if I can get it, that would just be plain awesome.
I did think of the ultimate endurance test in regards to that, which is why I want to find it...

Stepcharts people make themselves are much better than autogenerated steps, so this wouldn't really be worth much to me.

RBCF: That is a matter of opinion, and as I have not had the chance to play anybody's personally created stepcharts, I cannot give an opinion on it.
The game available on play-asia...problem is, I live in the USA, and have the USA PS1 and PS2 consoles. Guess I'm outta luck on this.

Yeah, that can be a problem lol. I'm planning on buying a Japanese Ps2 for playing my imports. Right now I've been using swap discs but I've recently found out they are not good to use as they will shorten the laser's life span. 
Play Asia has a new slim line pink Japanese PS2 for 179.99 I believe. May get that seeing how that is a good price for a Japanese Ps2. |

Hmm...
it's a royal shame, and I highly doubt I could find someone willing to take the time it will require to properly make stepcharts (at least for Standard, Heavy and Challenge) for the tracks I had in mind for my ultimate endurance tests.
I might consider buying a Japanese ps2 so I could get that game for it...but then, would the Japanese PS2 be able to read USA audio CDs?

Sweet. When I can afford to I'll look into getting a Jap. PS2 and the game for it. Will be a long time, but then I can see what my endurance challenge will be.

There is a United States PS2 game called "Dance Factory" that is similar to the games that have been discussed in this thread. The link below is for the game's page on www.ebgames.com. I would think the game would be superior to the PS1 games, although I'm not sure. The game is also affordable at 24.99. There is also a program called Dancing Monkeys that creates steps for Step Mania. Good luck.

It really isn't, though. I guarantee you that autogenerated stepcharts, on average, can't compare to charts by actual step artists.
Autogeneration takes a lot less time and effort than writing a bunch of charts with an editor. If the quality and variety of autogenerated charts was comparable to those of hand-written charts, the process of writing stepcharts by hand would not be used very often in dancing games (which is certainly not the case).

Ok, looks like I might not have to resort to imports and the time it'll take to get the money to buy them. If I can find this game it'll save a lot of time. As for making my own stepcharts, or having someone else do it, the tests I have in mind are LONG. I really don't know how long it takes to make a 90-120 second stepchart, but I can imagine that it takes quite an investment of time to do, especially to create a respectable one.
I really do doubt I can find someone who's willing to put in the time to create 3 different levels of stepcharts for music that is 17 and a half minutes AND 21 and a half minutes in length. This is why I want the autogenerator, not only to see if such a thing can be done, but also to see what it creates.

I dare you to find someone who prefers autogenerated steps to hand written ones. I understand that you claim to not have played hand written ones, but we're not talking about you. It's just that out of people who have played both, they WILL pick the hand written ones.

If you want to make a great stepchart, you have to put alot of thought into it and take your time because if you throw it together in a short time, you'll look back on what you made and be ashamed. You should first listen to the song and think about how you want the steps to follow the music. For example, you could start by following the bass and then when the main synth kicks in, jump to that. If the song repeats the same chord several times, you could think of several different ways to go with the music instead of repeating the same pattern because that would get boring. There's also the placement of the steps to consider. You don't want a stepchart that requires little turning, is full of awkward movements, or highly repetitive. Think to yourself, "would most people enjoy playing this stepchart?"

Wouldn't know where to begin, for one.
At least I already understand it would take a LONG investment of time, but it wouldn't hurt to get some assistance. Until then I'll just try to find Dance Factory.
