So I've never seen a 1st Mix machine, and I've always wondered what the machine and the arrows and all of that stuff look like.
Does anyone have pictures or something stored somewhere?
Edit: I hope no one minds this being in Chit-Chat. _________________

Here is a page that lists quite a few screenshots of DDR 1st Mix from Japan. _________________

the cabinet looks the same, it only has like 10-20 songs though. >< I think it has the 2nd mix engine, not too sure. _________________

The game engine is the same as 2nd Mix, except for the life bar, score meter, and score screen, although the US 1st mix machine uses 2nd Mix's exact interface. _________________

It doesn't look that much different from the current games. But maybe I don't pay enough attention to detail. _________________

The funny (or not so) thing about 1st mix was if you hit any arrows and it wasn't a step in the actual chart, it gave you a boo and drained your lifebar. Made freestyling impossible unless you did a bunch of hardcore moves on the corners and center.
Ah fun fun, the golden days. _________________

Ah fun fun, the golden days. | Just like FFR. No freeze arrows back then... Speaking of which, one time when I played FFR, I held down an arrow as if it were a freeze arrow and it kept giving me Boos. Does it do that on 1stMIX, too? _________________

As Flazh mentioned, that was only on the home version, and thankfully it wasn't always like that. It was an option that went by the odd name of "Arrange Mode". Also, stepping on a non-chart arrow in Arrange mode actually gave you a judgment of "OUCH!" and took more off your life bar than a miss! What was the point to this? Who knows, man, who knows? Anyway, you can see a few more (tiny!) screenshots of the game at Konami's Japanese 1st Mix page (warning: totally old-school nothin'-but-HTML 1998-style web design ahead). |

it's amazing that they would even have a mode where if you pressed an arrow that wasn't on the step chart, your dance meter would drop. it shows you how much DDR has changed over the years. |

Yup, there was an Extra Stage on the game. If I'm reading the Japanese correctly, you accessed it by clearing your last song with a full life bar. No full combo, no AA/S/SS/ ranking necessary, just a full life bar. I'm not sure, however, what the phrases "Normal kitei kyoku wa Trip Machine" and "Hard kitei kyoku wa Paranoia, Trip Machine desu" mean. I think you have a choice between the two songs, but I'm not sure. If someone can read Japanese better than I can (which isn't hard!), feel free to correct me.
As for the wonky arrows, if you think that looks weird, you should see the gameplay diagram on the PDF of Konami's patent for DDR filed with the U.S. Patent Office. Look at page 11. Player 2 has two up arrows, the arrows are scrolling down the screen, and the arrows are enclosed in boxes! Heh. |
