I went to the mall today and saw these two geeks playing this game called beat mania and wow that has to be one of the most retarded games i have ever seen. Why would anyone play it? I just don't understand it the game looks like crap. I didn't try it but i really didn't want to waste my quater. to me it looked like DDR for lazy kids who can't move there feet and actually get a work out. You might as well play stepmania on the keyboard and save some money. Now i know alot of you love this game out there and i don't mean to be so harsh on the game and you players out there but someone seriously explain to me what makes this such a populair game to everyone? I just don't see how pressing buttons and turning a record is fun. thanks |

Uh you call people geeks for playing then walk over to a DDR machine?! What about when you are seizuring on the DDR pad?
What you are asking is pretty much why does anyone play video games because DDR is among the only games that actually requires any physical activity.
Now my reasons for enjoying IIDX--
Been playing keyboard/piano for years and it helps my dexterity.
The music is much much better than DDR.
It still has new Styles consistantly coming out so the same songs don't get old (unlike DDR)
The difficulty is amazing--DDR couldn't hold a candle to it, Pop N' is probably the only other game with a similar difficulty level.
You actually effect the music because each key you hit makes noise, which is fun for some remixes (though not recommended while in Arcade)
The videos are usually really interesting and made specifically for the song (hell I catch myself sometimes watching the video more than the notes).
Stepmania = 4 Keys (6 Solo)
IIDX = 7 Keys plus turntable
Seems kind of hard to emulate in stepmania...though there are IIDX sims and if you are agruing that you should download it to play on the computer then why not download all the DDR/ITG songs and play on the computer? There are pad converters even. The reason we buy the games is because no matter how hard the emulator tries, it will never be as good as the original. _________________

to mostly harmless...read mattman's post, it sums up my feelings exactly
to mattman...come on man, saying that pop'n is the only thing close to beatmania is garbage...sure they both are difficult but so is high-end drummania and keyboardmania(won't comment on guitar freaks or para para as i haven't played either)
of course, i could just be saying that as i haven't yet mastered any of them... |

Para Para is very easy (arguably the easiest one, next to Dance ManiaX), Guitar Freaks has become much harder (earlier ones were pretty easy) but I still find Guitar Heroes 5 Key setup harder.
Drummania and Keyboardmania on the other hand are also quite hard, but IIDX and Pop N' always seemed harder, then again it depends on the person...I am terrible at drums therefore drummania was harder to start. Keyboardmania was actually quite easy because I've played piano/keyboard for many years, the hardest part was getting used to seeing that many notes drop. _________________

I don't see how anyone could construe DDArgh as fun. Fair enough? And since when is it a workout? I get more tired from walking to class than I do from Maxx Unlimited. _________________

GF is pretty hard. DM aswell. I find KBM easiest of them both. PnM and IIDX are both argumentable. If you ask me I like IIDX better. _________________

Of course it is more challenging, but so is real dancing, real keyboard, real drums, real DJ'ing, and real uhh...hitting giant plastic buttons (?). The reason bemani is so fun is that anyone can just pick it up and learn how to play, they don't need months and years of practice like the real thing.
Now will people be more impressed with you being able to play a game simulating the instrument or you playing the real one? The real instrument of course, but that doesn't mean that simulating it isn't quite fun.
Give each game a try and see for yourself, you might be surpised and like it, I know most drummers that try drummania have loved it. Going in with the mentality of it is "retarded" or whatever will likely cause you to hate the game, even if you enjoyed it--so please just keep an open mind and have some fun. _________________

It's a GAME. You don't get scores and pretty graphics with real guitars. :P
mattman is right, it's much easier to pick up and just have fun with it then real things these games are based off of. It's all in good fun. _________________

Are you sure you didnt see a regular 5 key beatmania (everyone in here has made compairisons to IIDX...). 5key beatmania is alot of fun, but i wouldnt be surprised if you where discouraged because of its old old graphics. _________________

I'm betting that's what he saw. He said waste his quarter...so it probably was an old machine (since most of them are like 25 or 50 cents to play).
Yeah...the old beatmania games are fun but they look bad. IIDX is a lot better. However - if it's a Beatmania: The Final, that's awesome. It has some really cool songs on it, and you can lay the keys out like in IIDX. _________________

There were a lot of needless words in your post, so I went ahead and omitted them. You can thank me later.

You have got to be one of the least self-aware people I've seen in awhile. Do you realize that people have thought and/or said the EXACT same things about you when they watch you play DDR?
Beatmania (particularly IIDX) is one of the most difficult music games to pick up and play, and is even MORE difficult to master. It makes DDR look pathetic in terms of difficulty. It is truly a badge of honor to be able to play the harder songs on the game and play them well, because the difficulty simply dwarves anything you've seen on DDR, Guitar Hero, PaRappa, Pump it Up, In The Groove, etc. I have literally seen a person that's double-starred an 11 on ITG fail a 1 on Beatmania IIDX. It's that hard.
For that matter, it dwarves the difficulty of pretty much any GAME out there, period. Ninja Gaiden? IIDX spits in the face of Ninja Gaiden. Metal Gear Solid 3? IIDX uses Extreme difficulty as a punchline in its jokes.
In addition, the arcade cabinets are designed with a lot more care and are some of the most well-built arcade machines you will find anywhere. 5-Key is designed well enough as it is, but this is especially true of IIDX. They make some DDR cabinets look like cardboard in comparison.
IIDX is also a much more involving experience than DDR is. In DDR, you're just sort of stepping wherever they happen to think the beats should go. In Beatmania, you're actually playing the majority of the song yourself.
You said that Beatmania is just DDR for lazy people. By which method of intelligent deduction did you arrive at this conclusion? Is it simply because you're pressing buttons with your fingers instead of stepping on them? If I am to follow that logic, then no game is absolutely complete if you don't step on light-up panels at some point. Let me know how good you do playing Super Mario World on the dance pad. _________________

Actually, that's just V 7 Key. There's one segment on Another that even Lisu has to play 2-handed on (that part with the incredibly awkward triple rolls).
Still, anyone that doesn't find that impressive is obviously blind or is clearly no judge of genuine talent.
Lisu is, was, and always will be my IIDX idol. _________________

I'm sorry, but pop'n music is harder than IIDX. The end!!!!
