Hi there,

Well, I have two softpads, that are not made by RedOctane, but they are similar in that they are a foam-insert type. Overall they are pretty good and I haven't had too many problems with them. However, I'd like to play doubles, and the two pads keep slipping apart during gameplay. They do have that special bottom rubbery surface, but they still slip apart. They are on a carpet, by the way.

I've already tried taping them together with thick tape, the kind you use to close up packages that you ship through the mail, but it didn't really work.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Don't take my word on this, because I don't play doubles.

I think you need two metal pads and a double bracket to hold them together to play double effectively. OR, plan B which I worked out in my head, duct tape the two pads together, then duct tape the set to the floor; if you don't your modded double pad will just slip around while playing.

If you're playing on carpet:

Put 4 velcro strips on the undersides of the pad. Make sure they are the side that's plastic (the one with the loops), not the clothy one. Do not put them under the arrow panels. Place them in a diagonal position at the corners of the pad (so you can at least get away with corner buttons).

From there, just align them side to side as best as possible. They will NOT move.

Apart from (I think) switching which strip is hook and which is loop, Reenee has you covered on carpet. (I'm pretty sure the hard plastic strips you're recommending are the hook strips; the softer cloth-like strips are the loops.)

For reference, if you're playing on a hard surface, the best I've found is to run a long strip of the clothy Velcro strips on the bottom of the pads, near the edge where the pads should be joined. Then use the plastic "hook" strips without removing the backing to join the two pads together at three places, one under the lower diagonals, one just above the center arrows, and one under Start/Select. Unfortunately you will feel the long strip, but it works better in the long run. I had a lot of small pieces that just wouldn't stick after I removed the other half a few times. Putting the strip along the entire length finally stopped that problem.

Thanks for the advice! E1.gif

When you say "the plastic side [of the velcro]," do you mean, the side with the rough, sharp texture should be facing down (toward the carpet)? And I guess the side that is on the other side, should be glued or taped or something to the pads?

So that'd make 8 velcro strips, 4 in each pad. Correct?

And where can you get velcro strips? "The Home Depot"?

Anyway, thanks. Hopefully your suggestion will work. Sometimes, though, I need to put the pads away, so hopefully they will move if I need to lift them upwards, but not move from side to side. E4.gif

Dang, I just got some new foam pads and this is just what I was wondering. Anyway, if you want velcro strips, I'm pretty sure they have them at places like Fred Meyer in the checkout lanes. If not (or if they're just little squares of it), I'd probably look around in hardware stores.

I believe Reenee's suggestion was to use the rough textured side, as you put it, on the bottom of the dance pads, so the self-adhesive sticks to the pad and the hooks face down. As far as the soft side goes, you can basically throw it away. The idea is that the carpet itself acts like the soft side of the strips. Just to verify it will work before you stick the strips to your pads, try just taking one of the textured strips, place it face down on the carpet, press it in lightly, then see if you can move it side to side, and if you can easily pull it up.

are u sure that velcro strips will stay put well? It seems that it might tug on carpet for a little while, but since the material of the carpet is much thicker and looser in bundles of fabric, wont it be hard to have to stick?

I have two soft ignition pads and I really like to play doubles so I know what you're going through. I used to use duct tape but that doesn't work well on carpet so I ended going through an entire roll in about a week. So what I decided to do was go to the lumberyard and I bought a 4' x 8' x 23/32'' piece of plywood and two 2 x 4's. Then I got some spec's for a DDR arcade pad layout and cut the plywood accordingly. After cutting the 2 x 4's and screwing them to the outside of the plywood I slid my soft pads underneath and voila! For about $40 I built myself a softpad frame which feels very similar to the arcade pads. I'd gladly post some pictures but I can't figure out how to do it... riiight.gif

EDIT: ok - here are the pics http://wilshire.50megs.com/

Yeap.

modifying the soft pads on the top of plywood is better than is playing on carpet.
