All my buttons lag all the time!

When i go into stepmania, then play in a song when you are mashing buttons fast, like determinator or summer, the buttons will randomly stop responding for about 1 or 2 seconds, then will rapid fire afterwards, causing me to fail the song immediately.

I also noticed that everything kinda moves a little slower in the menus, and I get a lot of afterimages of a menu i just exited out of. It's really hard for me to explain it.

In any case, my first statement is what is preventing me from being able to play stepmania without failing every song. Does anyone know what the problem could be? And i'm pretty sure i have all the required things to run stepmania (except a video card, but i've been able to play stepmania perfectly without one before)

It sounds like your keyboard is causing the problem. Turn off all the Locks (Caps, Num, Scroll) and see if that makes a difference.

Maybe you have everything on the graphic options set at their highest? Or, if they're set at the lowest, try a lower resolution screen. (Fullscreen seems to run better than Windowed)

I had the same exact problem and i fixed it by disableing my custom theme and using the default(strange)

I dunno what type of keyboard you have, so I'll just say this:
If you're using a USB keyboard, you can probably only put in 3 keys at a time(annoying, I know...all keyboards are not created equally).

If it's a wireless keyboard, make sure it's not getting any background noise, or being disrupted(lots of pop cans can do this, so can cellphones and cordless phones, or just lots of things between the transceivers; wireless keyboards are magical but they're not perfect)

Other things, as said before, could be that you're giving your computer too much to do and it just can't handle it(graphic settings too high). My friend runs stepmania on a 95(if he doesn't upgrade soon I'm going to have to force him to) and his lag is so bad that he just can't play the faster songs, and most heavy songs in general.

Basically though, take down any setting you can find, graphics, sound, etc, and see if that helps. If it doesn't, then try cleaning your computer area(if you're wireless in any way). And if your keyboard is USB, just make sure to lift up your fingers. If you push too many down, the USB just won't transmit any of the more recently pushed buttons.

And if you have nerdy computer-savvy friends, don't tell them your vid card dilemma. Even nerds in large groups can do damage. And they don't like it when bad video cards are in computers;)
