Hm....a covering might be possible for rain and such, but I doubt that the really cold temperatures of winter, or the really hot temperatures of summer for that matter, would be good for the machine. You'd have to find a way to do temperature control.
Also, you'd have to do something about the glare from the sun. I've tried playing Stepmania outside, and it's usually fairly hard to do. I think that's why most of the arcades I've been to have been fairly dim. |

Don't most outside malls have walls and gateways that lock, to protect kiosks and such? |

hey man theres an arcade down here that has it outside, and all they did was have a tent over the machines, and the sides and front roll up, so when a storm comes they roll it down, thus getting rid of weather problems, also idk what your gonna do about vandalism, becuase this place locks up when it closes, hopeuflly that was some help to you

Although the idea is great and does have great intentions (i'd support it)... it seems like no matter how you look at it, weather will always be an "antagonist" in this scheme you have plotted up.
If you put walls around it (clear ones for people to see) it could get too hot in there in the summer and possibly make people pass out. If it gets too cold, the machine could have some malfunctions. If it rains, water could possibly seep through, and etc...
If this is ok, you could possibly make a "half in/half out" type of machine. Basically, the machine is located by the entrance of some arcade or location, but you leave the doors/place open (and keep the machine RIGHT at the entrance) to make it so people can see it clearly enough and watch people. I know that sounds lame and, bear with me, it is hard to describe... but if you could have seen the video they had at this site earlier in the year with some guy with his shirt off passing PSMO and AA it stealth, you'd understand what i was talking about. Maybe talk to Sherl0k (ooppss.. i mean "mr mod guy thing... hat") or IguannaGrrl about recovering it or digging it up for you. _________________

buy a decent size Rubbermaid shed, trick it out so it looks cool and goes with the ddr theme. insulate it and put maybe a small heater in there for winter, and a cold fan in there for summer. i dont know if the "people" will allow this, but its worth a try. and its the best idea i have. but somehow, a MOD or some smarter dude will come along and find many faults with my idea. o well _________________

StrongBad: If you do have the chance, PM Eugene (PSM->G) in the Southern California regional boards about maintaining a DDR/ITG machine that's outside of a buliding. He's been doing this for years at the Pro-Swap Meet in San Bernardino, CA. Hope this helps! Please reply, over! Thanks!
