Ok heres the story: I recently got into a debate with my brother over Anaerobic and aerobic exercises. I brought up DDR in the conversation and he said that its definetly aerobic and not anaerobic. After that i brought up the fact that hard songs (9-10 footers) might be anaerobic, but he just denied it

So the question is:If you were doing hard 9's and 10's, would it be considered an anaerobic exercise?

I'm no health expert, but it could be both. Anaerobic sections of the song would be jackhammers or drills, for instance. DDR as a whole is more aerobic, because you'll notice (at least, I do) that you're more out of breath, increased heart rate, etc. after playing a few sets of songs than you would be if you had spent the same time lifting weights. Weight-lifting is anaerobic. Sure, you might be breathing heavily, but your muscles will be burning more than your lungs will be worn out. The best example of being both aerobic and anaerobic might be ITG's "Pure Hell" Marathon Course on Intense mode. Hardcore of the North, particularly the 1/24th notes, will require stronger/faster muscle reflex (ana), but the course as a whole is aero.

I used to hear something about ana being anything shorter than 90 seconds. If that's true, then DDR is right on the cusp, per song length.

That doesn't make sense... you don't think sprinting 400 meters would be aerobic?

Absolutly! nerd.gif I agree with him 100%. I believe that DDR is so diverse that it is considered to be both aerobic and anaerobic. There are songs such as CSFIL (Speedy Mix) that leave you breathing deeply (aerobic). On the other hand, there are songs, such as TLOM that is very... well... both. It takes alot of breath and muscle to finish this one.

Ya know, now that i think about it... the factor of whether you stretch beforehand could be a factor. I've noticed when i play and i've stretched ahead of time, then i don't feel musle pain or weak legs, but rather "out of breath". This compared to not stretching, i'm not out of breath, per se, i'm more aching in pain in my legs because i haven't stretched. See both sides? nerd.gif

I'm pretty sure most hard songs will put you in oxygen deficiency, making them anaerobic.

Anaerobic is also spurts of energy, versus being drwawn out.6-8 footers would pobably be more aerobic, and higher than that anaerobic. Look at other sports: basketball is aerobic, baseball is anaerobic. Jogging is aerobic, sprinting is anaerobic. LoM and such is about the equivelant of sprinting for over a minute and a half, whereas JanaJana is like doing steps.
