"As a series, Dance Dance Revolution has had a bit of trouble breaking into the American market. When the first arcade machines were imported (illegally, I might add) to the West Coast they were an instant hit with the hardcore gamers. Konami of America saw the potential, but dropped the ball on execution. When the U.S. version of DDR hit the arcades it was but a pale shadow of the then current Japanese 3rd Mix. Faced with an inferior domestic version or a superior import, arcade owners and players naturally ignored legality and went with the better machine.
A similar situation befell the home market. The first U.S. PlayStation release of Dance Dance Revolution was based on the Japanese version of 3rd Mix. At the time, Smile.dk's catchy candy-rave tune "Butterfly (Upswing Mix)" was the unofficial anthem of DDR. Konami even used that song to demo DDR to American press. Then, at the last minute, the song was pulled due to a licensing snafu. US gamers got a decent game, but one that was lacking the song most players would have known from the arcade version.
The second U.S. DDR release, Disney Mix, featured a difficulty mode not seen in the Japanese release, but the song list was decidedly lacking. Konami redeemed itself somewhat with the release of DDR: Konamix earlier this year, however importers were still ahead of the game. Konamix had no licensed songs and it was based off of 4th Mix. When it shipped Japanese players were already enjoying 5th Mix at home.
With a history like this, most American DDR fans weren't expecting anything special out of DDRMAX. Boy were they ever wrong!" (http://ps2.gamespy.com/playstation-2/ddrmax-dance-dance-revolution/577779p1.html)
...as for the Spider-Game....i couldn't find one bit of information related to DDR and spider-stomp, nor the history of spider stomp. Therefore, one could conclude that the japanese camp up with this brilliant idea of DDR! If you're talking about this website, then this is what you're looking for http://www.ddrfreak.com/about.php

This, actually, can have many different general answers because it can vary from person to person. Some people just have a better time with other songs than others. Here are just a few songs in each category that you should be able to do, followed by a "transition" song that connects the two difficulties (aka: Light-Standard, Standard-Heavy):
Light:
Silent Hill
Spin the Disc
Burning Heat! (3 option MIX)
Cartoon Heroes (Speedy Mix)
Light-Standard Transition songs:
Max 300
Maxx Unlimited
The Legend of Max
Paranoia Survivor
...although these do sound a bit harsh and a wee-bit too fast, that's ok. Ya see, these songs are basicaly testing if you could withstand the challenges of the next difficulty. Also, if you finally master these songs and move on to the next difficulty, it shows that you have developed a very keen sense of "reading" the arrows and mastering the skills necessary for the next level.. In all actuality, you should be able to do these 4 songs on the given difficulty to be able to move on. Why? As it was said before, these push you beyond the level you're at and teach you new skills immediatly so that you're ready for the next level.
Standard- Also see "Light" songs.
Heavy- Also see "Light" songs.
Lastly, as it was just stated, your transition songs should be "boss" songs (Red colored songs that you are able to chose on the Song selection screen.
Hope this explains everything SO FAR.... _________________

That's more of a question that should be directed to Komani representatives. But I'm going to take a stab at it. I know there were earlier versions of DDR, with names that slip my mind at the moment. But it's a basic concept, hit markers that go to the beat of the music. Something must have clicked in their minds to have the markers as directional arrows on a pad to give the feel of dancing. _________________

Despite your reasoning, I think you're crazy for recommending Maxx Unlimited or Legend of Max as Light-Standard transition songs. |

'back in the day'? that question may need to be a bit more in depth. i know most early players first learned to spin on 'butterfly', but you'd know too if you read the dictionary kindly provided by the site. _________________
