Problem with Stepmania

Hello, whenever I'm playing, sometime during a song (be it the 10th+ or the first) stepmania just stops. The music stops, and the arrows stop scrolling, the life meter stps bobbing upo and down. I can go back in screens but that doesn't fix anything. I have to reboot stepmania to be able to play again, and it still freezes randomly during songs.

Does anyone know what causes or how to fix the problem? I've tried reinstalling but that hasn't helped. Thank you.

3.9rc2a is the SM version
system specs are:
Intel Pentium 4 2.8ghz proccesor
Gigabyte GA-8IG1000-L (motherboard)
1gb of rdram
ATI Radeon 9700 pro
rest shouldn't be important or is on board.
