I weighed about 205 three weeks ago and then I got a girlfriend and decided to start exercising, eating better, etc. (I have been pizza hut free for 3 weeks(I work there)) Since then, I have been playing a ton of DDR and eating pretty well. I am down to 185 in only 3 weeks. The only exercise I really get is some basketball and other sports and DDR. I play 1.5-2 hours about 4-5 times a week. I sweat like a mother, especially lately because I am doing 8 and 9 footers.

Now the question is: Is DDR a good primary source of exercise? I think it is because I break a sweat and it tires me out. What do you think?

It depends on the individual. At this point for you, it obviously is.

I think it is, because:

a) it's fun. if dancing on blue and pink arrows to the rhythm of the music is not fun, then i don't know what is.
b) it's competitive. the good kind of competitive. it goes beyond omfgzzzz!! i pwned max 300!!! to a more personal achievement kind of thing, specially if you keep track of your scores.
c) you don't need to go outside. that's a big plus here in winnipeg, where is minus forty thousand million degrees all the time.
d) it's reasonably cheap. i mean, if you were to buy a fitness equipment set, it'd set you back about 400 bucks. you could always get a cheap ddr pad (for starters) and a copy of the game and poof, dance dance revolution the night away.[/b]

I think DDR is mainly a good source of exercise because it's sort of exercise you don't really realize you're doing. What I mean is, let's take going to the gym, which I also do. At the gym, you're always aware of the fact that you're exercising. There might be TVs or something to watch, and you can bring along music (which I do), but when you look down at the display all you see is exercise stats like time elapsed, calories burned, speed, etc. In DDR, unless you're playing Diet/Workout Mode there's nothing like that except your scores and grades. With music, 40 minutes of exercise goes by fast enough, but with DDR an hour can easily go by with me hardly noticing.

However, I don't think DDR should be your only source of exercise. From my experience, DDR provides no real exercise for your upper body, unless you play while holding weights, swinging them around. laugh.gif Admittedly, that may not be a concern for everyone, but it is for me since my arms are horribly weak. Anyway, DDR isn't my only source of exercise, but it's definitely one of my main ones.

DDR was originally designed to be an excersize tool.. when game makers were faced with the problem of obeicity .. the company konami rised to the challenge.. they created a game call Dance Dance Revolution (ddr for short) it was not only fun it was healthy. and it was a success. but ddr can also tone leg muscle .as it has done for me .. i have almost no leg fat.. almost no can pinch my leg... i love ddr

Since you are trying to lose weight, DDR is right for you. It is a great cardio-vascular excersize. You should just work on that for now, but keep in mind it isn't the only way to excersize. You also need to do other excersizes for a maximum fitness level later on.

Cardio is great for your heart and lungs, but you won't gain muscle without doing some additional strength training.

I wouldn't say DDR is my primary source of exercise, but it does play a part in my exercise routine E1.gif

It may be tiring sometimes, but the fun of the game more than makes up for it.

Um, what? Konami originally made DDR for Japan, a country where people's diets are overall much healthier than that of the average American. Not to mention the fact that most people in Japan walk or bike more than we do. As far as I know, Japan doesn't have a problem with obesity and never has, at least not to the degree seen here. In fact, Konami didn't even try to pitch DDR as a weight loss tool until the home version of 3rd Mix, after they acquired the Japanese health club XAX and introduced Diet Mode.

They should put ddr machines in gyms or workout places.

Unless you are playing heavy I\'m going to have to say it is\'nt much excercise. I mean I really dont think anyone breaks a sweat playing light mode.

Hey, I'd have more reason to go to the gym if they did. E15.gif

Wow you've got to be kidding right? Play on light mode and play the fast paced songs. You'll break a sweat!!! The only mode I don't think you'll be breaking a sweat is on Beginner. Don't be a jerk about it, you can get a good workout by playing on light mode, you'll just have to play longer or play only the fast paced songs.

What I've noticed is that, new players seem to find light mode very challenging, and they get tired after rounds, too. Except, to a different extent. My light mode friends fall to the ground after 5 songs.

And of course, you get tired after playing a round of standard to heavy.

Unless it's -40,000 degees, outside is better. Fresh air is what I like most about exercise.

DDR is a HORRIBLE primary workout UNLESS you are doing other stuff on the side.

Jason Enos, the guy that brought DDR to the US, has repeatedly said that DDR was not created as an exercise tool. They've certainly added in those features over time to capitalize on the fact that people have started using DDR in that capacity, but it was, first and foremost, just a game.
