smartjoy + dance mode

Hi

I have a smart joy plus adapter, and like most people i have problems hitting left-right, up-down simultaniously.

I heard that i should go into dance mode, hitting, "start"+"select" and "up" simultaniously.

On my controller there are two buttons, "start" and "select" does that mean i have to hit those 2 buttons and stand on "up" on my dancemat to enter dancemode?

Do i have to be inside stepmania?

How can i see that ii have entered "dance mode"?

I am on a Mac OSX 10.7
