I run slackware 10 and Stepmania RC2, i can help you.

Pretty much if your a n00b you shouldve done a Full Install of slackware 10, if you didnt, go back and do that, its only 3 gigs.

After its installed, login as root, setup your network connection, go out and get the video drivers for your card. Install them.

Untar stepmania into your home directory:
tar -xvzf StepMania-3.9-rc2.tar.gz or whatever the filename is, im pretty sure its tar.gz.

go in there and type ./stepmania

If it launches, exit, and install songs files and themes.

If not, im me.

The command is "tar". Did you somehow forget to type that part? It would be more helpful if you would say exactly what the error message was. We can't read your mind from here, you know.

Do this action:
Download "StepMania-3.9-rc2a.tar.gz"
to your home directory
Open up a terminal
type "tar -xvzf StepMania-3.9-rc2a.tar.gz" in there, without the quotes
push enter.
Volia!

You probably need to install your video drivers. Figure out what card you have, go to the website, download and install the drivers. For example, I have an NVIDIA Geforce4 MX 440. Stepmania would not work on my computer until I installed the drivers. If you install the drivers it should make pretty much anything to do with video run much more efficiently on linux.

i installed my video drivers and reconfigured x accordingly previously to my instillation attempt

however apon researching ALSA's driver database, i found that my sound card was not supported, i have an old 16 bit generic sound card laying around my house i plan to install, and test to see if ALSA will support it

the problem is, the crash dump is to cryptic for a n00b like me to find and fix the issue... riiight.gif

i will install the new sound card to see if that is the issue, my findings in the ALSA database and the line:

Couldn't load driver ALSA: Not enough substreams for hardware mixing

located the crash dump is leading me to belive that this is the primary issue

is that an accurate assumption?

Go to the store, buy a Sound Blaster Live card, put it in your computer.
