Most of my old crew are married and parents to newborns, now. We started back with Solo 2000 and 3rd Mix. I still play, about 20 sessions a year. Just don't have the time and money I used to, you know? But oh, when I do!
3rd Mix was all about SSR'ing. And 4th/PLUS? The "S4R" - Sudden, Shuffle, Flat. People'd go around bragging about "full combos" more than anything else, though. Songs like LEADING CYBER and ORION.78 without speed mods were really confusing, but the rage was always about RHYTHM & POLICE and DROP OUT. BRILLIANT 2U "Trick" was often the choice for freestylers, often along with BOOM BOOM DOLLAR and WONDERLAND.
A lot of other popular song just featured winding runs or simple stepping patterns; KICK THE CAN, Holic, and DREAM A DREAM instantly come to mind. And scoring Perfects, or even comboing through skipping steps? Totally off the charts cool. XD
That DDR Solo/Reverse trick? Very mean, btw. You could walk up and hit the start button while somebody ELSE was playing, and flip their stepchart right in the middle of their song! My friends and I had some fun with that for awhile; it actually HELPED us when DDRMAX came out, because most of us were used to Reverse and Boost already!
5th Mix came along with the stops, and... well, "The Matrix Walk" was born shortly after. We were such dorks! WILD RUSH, LUV TO ME, and AM-3P on Little had some fun routines going on with them. I'm surprised I don't see more INNOCENCE OF SILENCE or Fascination MAXX ones like that now, to be honest.
"Freeze Arrows?" You mean like, holds? DDR's gonna totally suck with those!!!
Me? I'm just getting old and lazy, though a few weeks back, I was still within 10 seconds of clearing Pluto Relinquish Expert. Nowhere NEAR how well I played back in 2005, though; that's about where I hit my peak.
EDIT: Oh yeah. You really don't want to know what Captain Jack or J.S.B. are up to. Trust me. :| |

I haven't heard anyone talk about S4R for a long time.
Tons of fucking fun. |
