Konami brought us DDR!

I've been squishing arrows for the last 7 years and playing in DDR tournaments all over North America! Picking up a few wins in some of them... not bad for a deaf guy in his 30's!

Touring with the WWE in Western Canada was also a blast as I would find new DDR machines in each city we stopped at.

I also have an original DDR 1st Mix machine in my room as well as a custom made machine.

Some people need to share there arrow scrolling adventures...

HAPPY 10th DDR!

DDR sure has come a long way.

I started in April '06. DDR/ITG has been a part of my weekend schedule for over 2 years now. I'm really happy with the friends I've made and I'm satisfied with how much my stamina has improved over the years.

But alas, DDR never did progress the way I had hoped. I started playing DDR at arcades on an SN machine. It was an unpleasant first time experience mainly because the hardware was just so bad. I became fed up and switched to ITG and stuck to it ever since. I hope DDR X changes my mind so I can play it again. I miss some of DDR's quality songs.

10 Years ago hardly anyone would have guessed we'd still be stepping today.

And since 2001 I have enjoyed doing so, here's to 10 more years!

I brought it up in another forum that I thought the 20th of Nov was the birth date of DDR, but someone else told me I was wrong.

http://www.ddrfreak.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=8914415&highlight=#8914415

Glad to see I'm not the only person who has heard this rumor/fact.

Hard to imagine I've been playing for over 6 of the 10 years. I started right prior to Extreme's release and have been playing consistently with very few long-term "breaks" ever since. This game has certainly changed my life, and in all ways for the better. I've lost weight, am healthier, feel better than I ever had at any other point in my life, and have also met some great friends through the game.

Thanks for everything Konami and DDR. CHEERS TO YOU!

No, DDR was out in September of 1998.

EDIT: And 20, November had been a song in Beatmania for quite some time before DDR was released. I never played the first Beatmania, but it was a song in 2nd Mix, which was out in March 1998 (and came to the Playstation in October 1998).

Well then there is some hell of a confusion. All the DDR forums from PNWbemani.net to DDRonlinecomunity.com have had posts celebrating the 20, Nov as DDR's 10th anniversary. I really wish someone could clarify when DDR actually was officially released in the arcades.

I'm thinking a lot of them probably think Beatmania came out after DDR, too.

EDIT: You can check with Aaron in Japan, too. He started playing DDR in the arcades in October of 1998, according to his "about me" page. I also have a couple of my videos from the Fall 98 Tokyo Game Show with DDR 1.0 from October 10 and 11 that same year on Youtube.

If we base it off game shows and conventions, that would mean Gears of War 2 came out like 10 months ago. Game shows are not release dates. DDR X has been in tests and shows for months now and I don't think it's even out yet. Perhaps November 20th was when it was "officially" released. Also, maybe AiJ started playing at one of these game shows or at a demo location?

Either way, I'm gonna side with the masses on this one. Even if they're wrong, it's much more fun to think that the song 20, November is a Bemani tribute song, just like 1998. Whether it's true or not, I don't care. I'll just live with my happy little blissful ignorance.

Except that I played it at that game show after it had already been released to the arcades. I've mentioned that before.

Just a Beatmania song that's been out since at least March 1998, possibly even since the end of 1997. I still don't understand why people have decided that it's the release date for DDR.

Not at a game show, since he specifically mentioned it was at the arcades. I also doubt it was a test location unless just about every arcade in Hirikata was a test location, too.

I think Bush is worthy of reelection, too. He's doing a great job.

Fine by me, but don't state falsehoods as the truth. That's likely the reason that people think DDR wasn't in arcades until November.

As an aside, no one should be using Wikipedia as a reference, period; it's not even consistent with itself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_game_franchises. Says DDR was released August 12, 1998 (not that early unless you count test locations) after the Tokyo Game Show (which was in October).

Here ya go: DDR 1.0. I played that in arcades in both Hirikata and Kyoto before November rolled around.

There's also this: DDR Internet Ranking Version (aka "DDR 1.5"), but celebrating the release of that version as the anniversary of DDR is like celebrating service pack 1 as the anniversary of the release of Vista.

Yep, 1.5 was what I played first, then 1.0 and I wondered where Trip Machine went.

Good times...

Haha, wow, that must have been a lame arcade. All the ones I went to got the 1.5 patch as soon as it was released. The Papillon in Kyoto (it's near the Shijou train station) even had all the funky codes you needed to enter on the platform tacked up on a sheet on the wall next to the machine.

I went to two different arcades, one that had 1.5 and so on. I was kind of disappointed when I heard my family was going to play in 1.0 arcade from there on. Until 3rd mix released and I found out 1.5 arcade stayed with 1st mix.

I learned the Maniac code a week before moving arcades. A handful of years later Extreme released and everyone could not get enough of it. I went back to 1.5 arcade and decided to go a round. Nostalgia hit me harder than a falcon punch and I left satisfied.
