I rarely use speed mods in DDR.
I use speed mods in ITG, and PUMP
I do it because that's how I enjoy the game.
In DDR I actually do much worse with speed mods.
I bar difficult songs sometimes, sometimes I don't.
I love DDR
I always love ITG. Mainly due to the high quality doubles charts in the game, and I can play a difficult songs that sound good. (Like Energizer, Clockwork genesis). I also like the different pace of music.
It's fun to switch between games because you get a greater variety.
I also love ITG because it forced Konami to make more DDR games.
During the law suit, Konami had to prove they were still making games after having stopped for years, and now we have Supernova 1 + 2, with X coming next year!
Pump is fun for the challenge, and different music style.
I do agree that it can make songs easier to learn.
Easier to score, well that's a matter of personal preference.
Yarni:
Your post of an increase in the time window is interesting.
I agree with your point to test it with an average player.
I think you mean, if the player is a AAA'er, regardless of the setting he will score roughly the same.
But if the player normally gets a B, then easily get's A. I think we might have something there.
However, this could be a fluke.
IMO: The best test is both methods.
The AAA'er will recognize the accuracy of his timing and can purposefully step off beat, and see if it registers.
The other player is simply not good enough to recognize and perform that test.
But if he does better consistently using the 8x, there might be something there.
I think testing this would be interesting.
But very difficult to get accurate results. |

If anyone really wanted to test this, even though the original crackpot has already been banned, the simplest way is to have someone who can stealth play facing away from the screen and compare his 1x scores vs. his 8x scores. _________________

Yes, conspiracy theory fits this well.
I doubt there is a difference with the timing window. But it did sound plausible as a programming error.
I think it would be interesting to test it, that way. |

I don't know about the DDR engine, but on stepmania, I can give you a fierce "no" > there is no timing window conspiracy.
I play both x1 and other mods on DDR and, based on how I score, I would tell you that there isn't a timing window conspiracy with the DDR engine. |

Will, that kills the conspiracy IMO.
If it isn't in stepmania, I doubt it is in ddr.
Thanks for the info |

Well, not surprisingly, this thread has deteriorated like all the similar threads before it.
Reading arrows at 1x is a different skill than reading arrows at 3x. Once you learn how to play with speed mods, it is typically easier than playing without them, but that does not somehow make it a less valid way of playing. Moving your feet back to the center panel after every step would be harder than the way most people play, but no good player in their right mind is going to argue that that is how the game should be played, or that anyone who doesn't return to the middle is worse than anyone who does.
The game recognizes speed mods as a valid interface option and does not change your score when you use them. Therefore, they are a matter of convenience and nothing more. The end. _________________
