I'd have to say that to an extant DDR is a sport or sorts, but it really will come down to opinion until its globally recognized as a sport. In my honest opinion however it's a sport.[/list]

I agree that it is a sport, its a challenge and a work out. It also can be competative. Especially if a prize is involved, like in tournaments. It seems more of a sport when people do freestyle on the machines. It can be a sport though, just put some good rules into play, create some teams, and then you will have playoffs in no time! laugh.gif But nobody would probably take it seriously. Imagine some people saying "hey the games on tv." says man 1 "what game?" says man 2 "The DD-Dancers Vs. the Revolutionators!"says man 1 "Oh, well i got the beers we cant miss this." says man 2. Lol! Just trying to get a laugh in too.

Last time I checked, DDR was in the video game section of Walmart and not the sporting goods.

If you honestly think DDR is a sport you should go /wrists. It's a video game. Get over it.

Thing is, I bet lots of fat nerds want DDR to be a sport so when someone asks them is they play sports, they can say "Yeah I do! I play DDR all the time, man! I can beat Max 300!"

I'm sure there's lots of reasons why DDR isn't a sport, but this is stupid and I'm not going to debate it

DDR is just a really fun physical video game to me that can be considered exercise.

Consider this. Are those Madden video games actual sports? Is Wii Sports actual sports?

sport (n): an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature

On a competitive level, yes. I think DDR Tournament play should be considered a sport.

Asking a question like this on a website like this is not going to give you accurate results, but that's not the point.

I think it's a sport. I mean, it will take like 20+ years until it's realized, and there's a chance by then that DDR dies off, Konami gets brought out (lol), etc. Nobody over like 30 plays this game at like, EvilDave's level, and that is why it isn't a sport, because NOT ENOUGH people play the game. poopy, i bet golf, soccer, etc. wasn't a sport at one time, just something a bunch of friends would get together and do for a period of time. Sound familiar?

I think the concept of DDR could qualify as something that could be considered a legitimate sport. If Croquet is a sport, I feel DDR should especially qualify. The only problem is that not enough people play it or accept it as such an activity in anywhere outside Norway.

Just to hammer some points home:

DDR played competitively = sport.

There's rules, competition, and a goal in mind (first place). It takes ability and practice to get better, and it is engaging in the sense that not anybody can just run with it and be awesome right from the get-go.

DDR played passively or by oneself = hobby.

There isn't any rules - you make your own. There isn't a clear goal in mind, and you don't have to have a certain ability to beat other players (because you aren't playing against anyone).

So there you have it, folks!

Using this response as an answer requires a proof that being a video game and being a sport are mutually exclusive. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a definition of "sport" that effectively excludes DDR.

All videogames are sports then!

I exercise my ass when use the couch.
I work my biceps when I lift up the remote.
I work my triceps when I reach for the Cheetos.
I work my neck muscles for extending my head to sit closer to the screen.
*Flexes 10 inch diameter arm*
yep, I'm fit!
