most people would say its a game but lets look at the fact that Dancing is a sport and DDR is a form of dancing. In any sport you have to jump and what not, just basically exhaust yourself like running. i say that DDR does just that and that it is way more exhausting then bowling and thats a sport.
what do you think?? |

We've gone through this topic many times; but this is a good debate.
In Norway it is a sport.
I believe it is a sport, IMHO
Many people think it isn't a sport, however:
There are many forms of sports.
Badminton is a sport
Golf is a sport
Chess is a sport
I don't define sport as just physical.
However, some people devote their lives to sports, but I don't think it's very beautiful devoting your life to a videogame. _________________

It's like a prototype of a sport. It could be developed and furthered into a full sport but really isn't much of one at the moment. _________________

It's more of a 'sport' than other games that are sometimes called sports.
Various first person shooters, for example. _________________

Sport: is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Sports commonly refer to activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor are the sole or primary determiner of the outcome (winning or losing), but the term is also used to include activities such as mind sports (a common name for some card games and board games with little to no element of chance) and motor sports where mental acuity or equipment quality are major factors. |

I'd say it's only a sport if you're challenging somebody else.
But also, I don't think billiards, chess, or golf should be sports. They just don't take enough physical work. |

I think DDR is just as much as a sport as something like Golf or Swimming. Golf is part physical, but mostly mental. You have to be able to control your motions and stuff. _________________

Lets see...
Is DDR an Activity? Yes
Does DDR have a set of rules or customs? maybe.
In tournaments and how people are ranked by their scores and such yes. However speedcubing is considered a sport, and has an objective that leads gameplay very wide open, so i'd consider DDR, at least in competition for highest scores, to be a sport. |

I consider technical DDR a sport on the same level as competitive board games (Chess, Go). Given its rigid structure and limited song list (as in, there is a finite number of songs and they have pre-defined steps), it's not quite an athletic or performance sport.
Freestyle DDR on the other hand is not dissimilar from gymnastics or breakdancing... if it was wider-practiced, it could be considered a sport.
Definitely more of a sport than Olympic interpretive dance, aka ribbon twirling (no seriously, it's an Olympic Sport during Summer Olympics. Watch in August). |

Alternatively, watch someone like Tiger Woods or whoever drive the ball 300+ yards and tell me there's no work involved.
Board games and non-physical video games should not be considered sports, IMO. |
I'm sorry, but if it has to be 100 degrees for it to even be considered physical, then it's not a sport. My work is more physical by far, and it's not a sport.
Also, any game that needs silence to play isn't a sport since concentration should be something of a challenge.
I have played golf quite a few times on 3 and 4 par courses (never with a cart, and always carrying my own bag). It's not much of a workout IMO. |

Yeah it could definitely be a sport. It has a competitive nature and has impartial scoring. Its very physical, which most people think sports are. |

its just as much a sport as bowling or golf
and to that kid that was talking about how hard it is to lug around gold clubs all day try a 200 pound bag up and down a hill for 2 hours because you didnt make weight one day
you sweat alot after the first 5 minutes
i wrestle and run track and cross country
and i have had more sweat come from me playing max300 and such then i ever have by running a few miles
to me its a sport
its one of the hardest sports out there |

that means 2 things
1) You're playing wrong
2) You need to use the bar
DDR is not anywhere near the hardest sport out there. Real sports require more thinking than just looking at a chart you've seen a hundred times and playing it. DDR is a basic rhythm matching game where you use feet, and if you hold the bar and hardly press the panels, it's hardly anything near a workout.
now pump it up on the other hand..... |

It seems to me that you can have clubs of things which aren't sports.

I don't think the act of "carrying 200 pound bags" is a sport either. Also, the gold clubs are easy. For a real work out, you got to use the solid iron clubs.

This is probably a bad criterion for what is or isn't a sport. I don't think mowing the lawn is a sport either.

Extending the sweat is a bad criterion argument, it seems that this varies from person to person. I simply can't run 2 miles, I'm too fat. 1 mile would have me almost collapsed. But I could do Max 300 without breaking a sweat at all. It's probably based off of all sorts of factors involving the muscles and lungs and heart; I don't know I'm not a doctor. It probably means that it's not what makes something a sport or not.

That's great, but it's not a very objective standard out there. I can see it now: "Hey Bill, do you think that there activity is a sport? I don't know Bob, we gotta ask shawn112. He's the decider of sports."
It seems to me that there are two factors involved in deciding whether something is a sport.
1. There are competitions.
2. The outcome is almost entirely determined by the skill of the contestants.
Seems to work to me. DDR's a sport. How easy was that, and I didn't even break a sweat.
In conclusion, it doesn't matter if it's a sport or not. Sport is just a word, and bestows nothing upon the activity. |
