The focus of stepchart creation is MUCH different now than stages were in 3rd Mix. I distinctly remember *many* stages where some of the major challenge was distinguishing a step from a jump in a stream, and what was a jump sequence from what was a 1/16 roll.
Nowadays, you've got expectations with stepchart variety that wasn't really taken into consideration (much) before. Skippy/gallopy songs are not necessarily "one per mix" anymore. Randomly streaming stages (like Get Up'n'Move, EotC, DAIKENKAI) still occur, but not very often. There's stages that focus on specific beat patterns (tropical/rave like), bluesy timing (the new "one-or-two-per-mix" thing), uber-slow stepcharts like bag, uber-fast ones like Fascinations, Flow, Poseidon, Pluto Relinquish; Stop-and-go'ers like CHAOS and Pluto (which I more or less like - but more so in the noticably patterened CHAOS style).
An "8" like DAIKENKAI, I would consider more a 9. Misdirectional "8" stepcharts like that have a different place and standard now, though; take for example, Wonderful Night (radio edit) or The Rockafeller Skank; which to me, are much more 8-appropriate. And rather fun ones, too!
But then, a lot of older mixes had plenty of easy "Expert/Maniac" charts that peaked at a spurt of 3 half-beat jumps. *shrug* Mr. Wonderful was an incredibly popular Maniac stage in it's time (where I am, anyways), but it didn't even feature a single jump - and all of the step timing was 1/2 or 3/8 beat apart; and it wasn't even 140 BPM, either. (135-136, IIRC?) And yet, it was rated a 7. All tempos were 90-200... and the ONLY exception I'd seen throughout 5th Mix's time was DROP OUT. Nowadays they range from 65-805!
Also consider, that difficulty used to be on a 1-8, and then later, a 1-9 scale. DDR does 1-10, now. In a 1-8 scale, yeah, THE RACE and UPSIDE DOWN would be 7-worthy; but on a 1-9 or 1-10? An 8 at LEAST. When skips were new (IE: HERO and TOGETHER & FOREVER), they were already considered "hard." T&F nowadays would be lucky to scratch a 7 - apart from the *presence* of skipping, and a stream section *CONSIDERABLY* simpler/easier that "Under the Sky's" it's pretty much a 5/6-footer.
As far as UtS is concerned, it woulda been a perfectly well-rounded 6'er if the runs at the end had just been more simple and fun to execute. But the way it stands now, the early part will bore experts, and the end will kill n00bs. Equal opportunity dissatisfaction - and a terrible waste of a beautiful-sounding song!
I will ask you one thing that since 4th/5th Mix has really been killing the rating system; and is a *staggering* problem in it now. What difference in *measurable* standards is there between an Expert 6-footer and a 7-footer? Or Difficult ones?
And a slightly less staggering, but certainly REAL one. What's the difference between a ten, and a "TEN!"? o.O (Besides... you know... a couple HUNDRED steps or so...) |

No, not even that. One thing I've certainly noticed is the proliferation of air in more difficult songs lately. Let's put SN2's Unreal as an example of that. It's rated as a 9, but with the massive air, it has the pure nastiness of a 10. Even in NGO the air is incredibly crazy, and it looks that of certain ITG songs in current existence. _________________

Probably already been brought up, but I do like how in Universe 3, it looks like Valencia is making a comeback (the one with the headphones and flame shirt). She looks too much like the downloadable character for DDRPC that I think it's her @.@
I wonder if that character creation mode will be able in X as well...
Are we still 3 months away from these being released? |

Pretty much, but E3 is in less than two weeks, and we should get more info on all three games there. _________________

Paranoia Respect is cool. I own Party Collection and play it every now and then...BUT, here are some songs that need to be in DDR X!
1. Akumajo Dracula Medley
2. Mind Parasite
3. DXY!
4. Bloody Tears
5. Pluto
6. Nemesis
*ALL with arcade true stepcharts/timing. 70 songs, eh? Well, just give me @ least 4 [of these] out of the 70 and we'll call it even Konami. |

If PARANOiA -Respect- is wanted so badly, it will be placed on the game, I'm almost certain of it...besides...they kinda have screwed us over the past two games and giving us even more ridiculous boss songs. _________________

That was only in Dance Master Mode...and it really didn't do anything except for unlocking more stuff in that mode. I prefer the mission mode that was in SN2 _________________

At least you didn't have to do it for the Ashley Tisdale song...Flowers is actually a fun song, and if you like using the D-pad, the mission should be cake :-P _________________

No it's not. & I ALWAYS use a DuelShock to complete "whatever" Master Mode.
Since we're talking about it, what do ya think they'll call the next one in X? Xtreme Master Mode? |

New DDR X screens!
New confirmed songs, all appear to be Konami Originals.
Party Lights / Tommie Sunshine
Flourish / Sonic-coll feat. francus maya
Xmix1 (Midnight Dawn) / dj jiggins
Tracers (4beat remix) / Ruffage and Size
Switch / Daisuke Asakura ex. TERRA
Stealth / Daisuke Asakura.
Switch and Stealth are obviously from SN2, but the other four songs appear to be commissions by Konami. Here's some artist info:
Tommie Sunshine looks...like a hippie. Hehe. He makes some pretty good Electro/Techno music. You can check out some of his songs here:
http://www.myspace.com/tommiesunshine
Ruffage & Size are hardcore/dance artists, and make the kind of stuff you would expect to hear on a Dancemania Speed album. I could not find an official site for them, but you can hear a low-quality preview of their song "Been On A Star" here:
http://sounds.choicerecords.co.uk/sounds/rfu004.mp3
dj jiggins did the "Power Mixes" for the Universe series, and Xmix1 implies a similar type of song in DDR X.
I could not find any information on 'sonic-coll'. However, francus maya is a vocalist who has worked on Bemani songs before. In SN2, she was the vocalist for the "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" cover. _________________

And from Pie's Screenshots, the ___ Master Mode will be called, "Street Master Mode" and it looks like the little areas/levels are venues? |

Huh, Emi kinda looks....I don't know. Can't tell if I like it or not (Rage looks cool, though). Maybe it's just that look, cuz I liked her in other screenshots & liked it. But notice at the top it says "MAX Carnival". THAT A HINT, KONAMI?!
STREET Master? What? How does dancing make you master of the street?! Whatever...It fits the theme, though.
Hey, think they could have.....VOICES?!
Konami's press conference at E3 is suppose to be at 2 PM (PT) tomorrow, so maybe we'll hear more info... |
