Ok, here's a simple way to put this debate to rest
In SuperNOVA, there is an oni course, MAX of MAXX, that uses these songs:
MAX 300
MAXX Unlimited
MAX 300 Super-Max-Me Mix
The legend of MAX
Fascination MAXX
The only MAX song that can be considered a "true" MAX song that isn't in the course is MAX.(period). As for if FELM can be considered a MAX song or not, I simply think it can't because as Naoki apparently said at some point, FAXX is something almost entirely new for the MAX series..so remixing a partially new song drifts it even farther from being another MAX, so it may as well not be in a MAX of MAXX course, but a new Road of 2MB instead

Naw, it doesn't work like that because paranoia is already in the name. Plus, if you listen to PS and PSM, you know it's basically the same song. Also, this is a nod to "Paranoia Max" from 2nd Mix. |

Out of all the arguments posted so far, yours is the most informed.
I don't know why people hype over the max songs as being the "boss songs" - if they knew their DDR history, they would try to follow something a bit more consistent, like the Paranoias. Paranoias are almost always either the hardest song in a mix or one of the hardest songs. The only exceptions were Max and Max 2 - no difficult paranoias were featured in those mixes. |

I actually thought it was the case of Fascination MAXX being a song with a MAX twist on some kind of "Fascination" melody (whatever that may be).
Ever since Fascination MAXX, I felt what characterized a MAX song was this:
-10-foot Rating on Heavy (Expert) and/or Challenge
-Stamina-sucking stepchart with tempo-change gimmick.
-High BPM
-Song title uses the word MAX or MAXX as a standalone thematic (larger words with these in their spelling otherwise changes the word entirely) or uses MAXX as a tagname (to differentiate from other tagnamed songs like PARANOiA MAX)
-Boss song status at debut
This would make all non-10 songs, songs that didn't emerge as a boss status, and songs with names similar in structure to the likes of MAXIMIZER, TRIP MACHINE CLIMAX, or PARANOiA MAX ultimately unqualified. I could be wrong, though, but that seems to be the case.
OR, we can just not be picky at all and consider the presence of MAX or MAXX (both as standalone words) in a song title to simply denote an extremely hard song for their time of debut in DDR. I would say both the "MAX song" idea and the "MAX class" idea are equally likely, if not both true. _________________

MaxX refers to Omega's (naoki's) song Max300 which was at BPM 300 because MaxX Unlimited was the next 300 song in the DDR list so a song is MaxX when It is around 300 bpm and the fastest in the song's mix series. |

What characterizes a Max song you ask? Simple. Gimmicky charts and unnecessary BPM changes. GOTTA HAVE THOSE BPM CHANGES!!! |
