ew, no. ITG released GOOD hardware (dedicab) with MORE mods. Rock Band hardware breaks if you look at it too hard and they didn't seem to do enough research to realize that speed mods are popular for a reason.

Not that I don't think Rock Band is fun, they just missed some key points.

Guitar Hero is the new DDR.

For a lack of better comparisions.

Would that make Rock Band ITG?

I'm inclined to agree with that. I've played DDR/ITG for God knows how long but now the only music game I ever bother with is Rock Band.

If either of these games were remotely physically active, I'd probably play them myself

Yeah, Rockband and Guitar Hero is getting all the promotion and the attention right at this moment. When I go to the arcade the DDR machine is ALWAYS empty, the second machine has been broken for quite some time, and no one has bothered to fix it. I've only been playing DDR for about 2 months, mastered it quite fast, now playing heavy. I'm a 31 yr old female, and now I have my 9 yr old son for the next generation. Even he plays the difficult already! He goes to the empty machines and gets the attention. Maybe if enough people watch him, they will try it.

Know what else I've noticed?

Guitar Hero [and variants] is far more well known over the earlier and ongoing Guitar Freaks.

The reason why is fairly obvious: Promotion and hype.

Plus I guess the licenced songs? Who knows.

No, but it's not as popular as it used to be.

With the new music games coming out (Guitar Hero, karaoke games, Rock Band, etc.), people aren't as interested in DDR as they were before it came out.

Also, it helps that people don't know Guitar Freaks cuz it never came to America. That, & people nowadays aren't interested in original video game music for rhythm games, it's gotta be filled w/ licenses....

That last video is only the tip of the iceberg for ITG edits.

But at least watching those videos kinda makes me want to play ITG again. I haven't played a dancing game in about 2 months.

It is probably because not enough people get on the ddr machine and grab attention and hopefully add more and more ddr players. Those same veteran ddr players probably moved on to life, either they couldn't or don't want to play ddr.

This is pretty much why i've moved on to IIDX. While it's a small minority in the US it's still fairly alive and I have connected with quite a few people from it compared to DDR in the last couple years.

Yes, the DDR era has ended. Mainly because of other, more popular and insanely overrated music games such as Guitar Hero.

I started playing DDR around April 2003. Up until the end of 2004, the scene in my area was huge. But because of the fact that Extreme was getting a little stale, and the fact that other music games (Guitar Hero) were being overhyped by the media, the scene died. At the arcade I usually go to, you always had to wait half an hour to play Extreme back in 2004. Now, you don't to wait at all, because nobody plays DDR here anymore. Everyone would rather sit at home and smash buttons really fast for no reason (Guitar Hero) or sit around and do nothing with their lives. But you know what? It doesn't matter. There's no point in reminiscing about the past. You can't go back in time, and once things change, they change for good. But one thing that pisses me off is all this stupid talk about Guitar Hero I have to listen to. That's all you ever hear about anymore is "Play Guitar Hero, Praise Guitar Hero, Guitar Hero Fanboy". You know what I say? Fuck Guitar Hero!

yeah, i referenced george carlin right there.

Wait wait wait. So stomping on arrows really fast for no reason is somehow better than smashing buttons really fast for no reason? And both of those are considered "doing something with your life"? News to me.

All studies indicate that playing DDR regularly improves your health and in turn will likely prolong your life. The only thing I think Guitar Hero has proven is to be a very easy way to get CarpelTunnel and arthritis.

One word comes to mind when topics like this comes up: Cyclic.

Not everywhere experiences the same level of DDR popularity, and not all places see it at the same time. Games in general do have slow and fast times in the spotlight, and DDR is just another example of this.

In short: No, and IMO if it bothers you so much, get people who never played before to play, don't let the preception get worse/bring you down if it is. It isn't that hard... shit, I got somebody who was stubborn as hell about trying the game in the first place ADDICTED to ITG for a while. Plus, you don't know how successful you'll be until you tried.

I have Guitar Hero 1, 2, and 3 and I think the concept ok but overall pretty lame. Once I heard of "rock band" I laughed my head off and ridiculed anyone who was interested in it. If guitar hero wasn't poser enough, they had to make that garbage.

Why would you buy all three if you thought it was a lame concept? And what is so garbage about Rock Band that isn't in GH? (Read: How is Rock Band not superior to GH in almost every way, other than the instruments breaking down?)

If the only advantage DDR has over Guitar Hero (or, I'm guessing, any other music game, save for ITG/PIU/whatever) is that it's a workout, that's a lame reason to bash other music games. Some people get their fitness elsewhere; would you still say that GH is pointless (or more accurately, more pointless than DDR) if the person playing it jogs regularly? I'm not trying to hate on dance games here, but I find it really ridiculous to portray DDR as some holy experience and GH as a pastime of losers.

(That paragraph was partly targeted at PureBlue, so don't feel like I'm trying to put words in your mouth, Suko.)

(Just as a side note, I actually like DDR better than GH... It's just that I don't see how one is OMGWTF so much better than the other.)

That's a good question. The first two were gifts, I decided to buy the third one because literally every one of my friends were pretty good at it and the game supported some fun competition.

Rock Band is extremely lame because if you have the money and resources and can gather people to start a fake rock band, why not start a REAL rock band? For the price of a 360 or ps3 alone you could get a starter drum set. I don't understand how people practice for hours on a fake instrument, when they could be getting real musical talent instead.
