In terms of what resembles what, it is the katakana. Three slashes straight across versus three slashes arched from top-left to bottom-right. ã¿ãä¸ãããif you happen to be able to read that (hiragana, kanji, then katakana). Also, the counter for 3 generic objects is "mittsu." ("ä¸ã¤") That, I believe, has more credence than just the kanji looking similar to the katakana. But, I forget the reasons everyone's said before.
Go and Ko in hiragana/katakana are written similarly: ã(go)ãã(ko)ãORãã´(go)ãã³(ko) respectively.
Japanese are known to attach or remove those two small dashes ("ten-ten") when they make compound words from multiple kanji and other situations. From what I've noticed, a lot of companies here don't make a word that exists in dictionary vocab but has a general meaning anyway.
I'm sure I've forgotten a thing or two. This has also been discussed a bajiggety-jillion times on this forum but it doesn't hurt to say it again. |
Also, the on yomi for ä¸ãis mi.
Lolz, this reply is like 12 pages late. Sorry guys, just new to the boards and didn't notice the age of this topic. |

But anyway, Konami will sue Soulja Boy for this. I'm sure 99% of you have seen this already, I just don't feel like looking through 11 pages to see if it was posted. |

Well, for the purposes of our jokes about what Konami will sue over, Konami doesn't care which came first. They'll sue the area code 573 even though that area code was in existence long before either DDR or PIU. |

I forget why; have someone more knowledgeable and less sleep deprived explain it. | 5=Go
7=Nana
3=Mi |
Close. While 5 and 7 are Go and Nana (shortened to na usually when counting fast), the kanji for 3 just looks similar to the hiragana (I think...may be katakana) for "Mi", and that is where you get the 573 thing...Yay Gonanami! |
3rd = mitsu
but at least you sounded smart |
IIRC its
5 = ko/gotsu (it would change to gotsu depending on the word to which it is a numeral of).
7 = Nanatsu
3 = Mitsu
Hence, Konami.
Mitsu doesn't always mean "third". For instance, look at mitsubishi. You can't use "third" in that instance - you would have to say three. It's commonly used as an ordinate for counting objects, and not necessarily an abstract placeholder. The more common place holder would be sanban = third.

What about Datsun/Nissan?
When they changed their name from Datsun, they were the second-best car maker in Japan.
Hence, Ni-san.
Which leads me to believe that Mitsubishi was 3rd at that point.
But who was 1st then? Honda? _________________

Mitsubishi = 3 rhombus (or diamonds):
ä¸è±
Datsun is actually in katakana. It was based on the founders names - DAT.
And Nissan doesn't have any numbers in it:
