Easy Question, but questionable?

Simple question here: Where did DDR start? Was it really first released in America? I always thought that it was first released in Japanese arcades, then America. I looked it up on wikipedia. I know that Wikipedia is not a legitimate source, but I would like absolute confirmation from the community here.

It started about a year after PIU came out so... early 99' I think.

It started appearing in the USA around mid late 2000 if I recall correctly. It might have made it here earlier though.

If you want a measuring stick - look at the earliest join dates on DDRfreak. January 2002 - and I'm pretty damned sure it was here before that.

It debuted in Japan as Dance Dance Revolution (later re-named DDR 1st Mix) in late 1998 and later arrived in the US in 1999 with the same name, but a slightly different songlist (missing a few songs from 1st Mix, but also including a few songs from 2nd Mix).

Is there a website that states this? I believe this and all, but I'm trying to convince my buddy who teaches DDR at my university that he handed a false fact to his classmates.

I've always thought that this was first released in Japan before the USA, but he won't believe me.

DDR 1st Mix was released in Japan in 1998. Subsequent mixes were regularly released, until Extreme, which was released on Christmas day, 2002. After that, DDR was stated as "over" (which, of course, was a lie, thanks to the rebirth with SuperNOVA).

DDR USA, not to be confused with 1st Mix (since they look similar), was the first American release of the game. It came out in 2000 (IIRC) and featured some songs from 1st-3rd Mix of the Japanese versions. Technically, it was the only mix legal in the US until SuperNOVA, but you always see many bootlegged and imported versions of DDR here in the States.

It was definitely released in Japan before USA, you can tell him that. Just look at the text on the first game.

I don't know if a website (other than Wiki) really consolidates all the releases and info correctly. This is just information I've gathered over the years of trolling here.

Dance Dance Revolution is a 1 credit hour class. Here at this website, you can find proof that DDR is a part of the Health Sport and Exercise Science Education.

Nothing big is taught in this class. Many people think that the grading scale is taught based on how well you do a song; that's not the case here. Actually it's based on improvement. Seems easy enough, right? Even though you have to write 2 essays (1-2 pages, times new roman, font size 12, double spaced, 1 inch left and right margins). Those two essays are written in the beginning and end of the semesters. The class does not go through all the versions of DDR (ie. Japanese mixes or even ITG). They just stick to MAX through SuperNOVA2.

I actually didn't take the class. I just come to assist the teacher and do a little teaching myself. I found out about this "topic" when he distributed a final to the students and here was one of the questions:

"DDR was first released in America, before Japan."

I looked at this question and it didn't make any sense to me. He told me that he went to wikipedia and that's what it told him. I tried to tell him that this statement was incorrect, but he then told me to find a source online that proves it wrong. I couldn't find one.

I've been playing this game longer than he has (7 years vs. 5 years) and I think I would know the logical aspect behind this.

The way I would teach this class would be slightly differently. I'll talk about that later. [/b]

I really want to know how they made that into an actual class - did they bring a machine to the campus?

If this is a serious PE elective - I actually might see if I can teach it at my college.

As for the DDR class, of course it's a serious PE elective! Hell, we even have rock climbing, fencing, and I think juggling was a new one (I'm kidding about the juggling). The only catch to this class is that it's on friday and you either have to take it at 8AM or 11AM. Usually the 11AM gets filled up faster than the 8AM. I forgot to mention that we teach techniques as well.

I guess you can say that the statement is valid, but people would have different opinions on it.

A fundamental rule of thumb in playing DDR is not to have your feet in the middle of the pad for the whole duration of a song. Everybody knows that! But first-timers always keep their feet together, so I always have to come into the classroom and tell them to "Spread your legs!" They always laugh, especially the girls.

One of the most annoying things I've noticed in some students is that they usually play only one song...constantly!!! I would always ask them to pick a different song because I believe that they need to have a broad view in playing DDR: from slow songs to quick step songs.

Because this class takes place inside the Jaybowl (university's alley), water is available to everybody. I know it sounds dumb to mention, but some people don't drink water (or anything) to keep themselves hydrated.

There are so much more I can mention that is being taught in this class. I'm sure you guys know more. But I mainly help the advanced players. I can try and help the beginners, but I believe that they'll have to grasp the concepts on their own. Usually some pep talk will always brighten their day.

Many people have mentioned various tips and tricks on DDR, and they can be found online. I can't think of all of them in my head, but the internet is always a good friend.
