what level do you play at? i think that makes a huge difference in longevity... i got mine in january (i was playing at 5's) and by march i was playing 9's and now i can do tens. During that time, i've had to 'fix' it 9 times. (yes, 9)
1) i get it, and all the little risers for the arrows are in the center of the pad, i have to rip open the pad and re-arrange them
2-3)the foam risers slide around causing double-hits, i have to again re-arrange them
4)the left arrow goes bad and i have to tape over a portion of the contacts to prevent them from ghost firing
5)i have to repeat step 4 for the other 3 arrows
6)i cut out the foam under the down arrow and replace it with foam from the lower right button
7)the controller goes bad and so i need to replace it with a ps1 controller that i had to sabotage for the job
8-9)i repeat step 6 on the left and right arrows
steps 4-6 & 8-9 are problems with the quality and design of the pad. steps 1-3 & 7 could be flukes... who knows for sure...
if you play at low levels (like 7 and below) and you don't plan on getting better any time soon, then this is probably a good pad for you, but if you play often at 8+ bars, you should really think twice about it and consider building a pad (the stealth is the same price as an ignition) or getting a CF or something _________________

I usually play 8's and 9's. My Ignition 3.0's work fine for any level of play. I've played 10's on it before, and I have not had any problems so far, other than ripping on my older Ignition 3.0. It sounds like you got a defective one, or one of the crappy ones that came in blue boxes, instead of the black and orange box. What color was the box it came in? Both of mine came in a black and orange box.
EDIT:
Did the box look like this:
Or did it look like this:

my came in an orange/black box (3.0 ... the 2.0's are in the other ones)
it worked fine when i got it (after i moved the arrow risers) ... its just that the cheap materials can't stand 1 hour of play 5 days a week. The foam wasn't defective... it was just cheap, and when i used it, the foam literally broke down into a pulp _________________

Well, I bought my first Ignition 3.0 around the same time you did. I don't know why you'd be having problems. I guess not all Ignitions are the same. |

Ok so I tried using duct tape to secure my pad to the carpet and when I tried to take the tape off it ended up ripping the stuff off the bottom.... does anyone have any other suggestions? How do you keep your pad from not moving around on carpet? _________________

I don't know if anyone mentioned playing like this yet, but I play my ignition with the top layer completely cut off. So when I play I'm stepping straight on the plastic contact layer. I like playing that way because it's in a way much more sensitive since you're stepping directly on it, and you'll be able to look at the pad and see if the foam under the contact layer needs to be replaced/flattened out. Like idConstruct, I've gone through flattening/replacing foam between the contact layers many times. Basically I've been using my ignition from july 2006 to present.
Also, I took the padding above each arrow, and put them on the corner arrows, so the arrows are pseudo-recessed like in the arcade pads, and the effect is much better with the whole top layer completely off the pad. The drawback is that if you play straight on the contact layer, you have to play with socks, because playing barefoot will have the same effect as playing with shoes since your feet will stick to the plastic. |

You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar. I am going to give this a try tomorrow. I don't play doubles often, mainly due to the shifting problem, but I do have both pads side-by-side to play with my wife. Both of our RedOctane pads move around a bit (although significantly less than our older BNS pads). This should be an elegant solution. _________________

I got my 3.0 delivered today, and frankly, I'm disappointed.
I read in this thread somewhere that you need to play it for half an hour or so to break it in, but after an hour and a half of use, I'm still getting flat out misses on the back arrow.
It *might* be the carpet, but having been playing in this same spot for 3 months using a cheap-o pad, the carpet is pretty much flat.
The Left/Right/Up arrows seem to work fine, and I've actually seen an increase in the number of "perfects" I get. The Back arrow works about 99% of the time, but that other 1% it's just completely missing. |

Still waiting for Red Octane to reply to my e-mail, sooo..
While I'm waiting.
Has anyone ever successfully glued the foam pieces together on their Ignition 3.0? The main problem with mine seems to be the joints between the tiles.
any suggestions on glue type? |

Ok. I'm calling this one right now.
This pad sucks. Period.
In addition, It's been 3 business days since I sent them my e-mail regarding the arrows not working 100%, and I've heard nothing
(honestly, is there *any* company that makes DDR pads that has even the slightest clue what the term "customer service" means?)
Instead of getting better, the pad is getting worse. The Left arrow is missing on occasion now, as well as the back getting worse.
I've played on $40 foam pads that out perform this thing by far.
Final analysis: Don't waist your $ on this pad.
Disclaimer: I don't mean to imply that my opinion is the end all, one true opinion on this product, it is simply my opinion, and what I would suggest to others who are looking at purchasing a dance pad.
edit: this just keeps getting worse. Going through the RMA process I thought I would give R.O. a chance to replace it, but then I saw this in their returns/warranty section:
"Exchanges normally take 2-3 weeks to process after our receipt of the package. During this time, we will test your item(s) and either send you replacement product(s) or reconditioned, refurbished product(s)."
translation: We'll send you a pad that was trashed, but we cleaned it up.
"If we find your product(s) is working properly, we will charge you a 15% handling fee and postage for return shipping."
translation: We reserve the right to make up any excuse as to why the problem is your fault, and we make money doing so.
Warranties are not renewed for exchanged items. For example, if a product has a 30 day warranty and was purchased September 1st, the original period lasts until October 1st. If an exchange takes places in between that period, the exchanged itemâs warranty lasts until October 1st as well. The exchange does not receive a new warranty period."
tranlsation: Even if we send you a brand new product off our shelves, we aren't going to give you a new warranty on it because we can't risk having you get another defective one which would cause us to have to do more work.
I am getting quite anxious about getting my own pad built and finished, but making sure it is done right is time consuming.

Basically my opinion on these pads (and any non-metal pad in general) is that to someone with no experience in fixing pads, it's gonna suck since they're either gonna be broken after a few weeks or even a few days of use, or they'll be shipped broken since they're folded in the box which causes the foam inside to rip.
For anyone that knows how to fix them, these pads will last a long time. If your pad ever breaks (ghost steps, unnecessary holds, etc) instead of buying a new one, cut it open and see what's wrong with it. Those problems are usually caused by something really small that can be fixed in literally 5 minutes. My ignition has lasted me since June of last year, and I still use it. I play 10 footers too but usually not higher since I don't have anything to hold onto when I play.
But the point is, the pad will last much longer if you learn how to fix it. I've had to fix mine every 3 months of use but I'm still pulling AA's in the 8-10 footers and the occasional AAA in the easier songs. As soon as I see a ghost step I know it's time to tear it open again. |

I might get around to learning how to fix it. However, I finished my home built pad today, and it is working perfectly, so I'm going to use it for a while now and see just how much it can handle. |

hi
i've owned a pair of Ignition 2.0 pads for years. They were in fairly good condition except for one of them until early this year, granted I did not play often/consistently/heavily.
The plastic inside was ripped anyway so I took a look at it and the sensors were all overlapping each other. I played with that but realized, between general cluelessness and aggressive play, that it would just come apart (or rather together again). there's a best buy down the block from where I work and they had Ignition 3.0's on sale for like $50 with a 2-year replacement plan for under $10. I just opted for that.
I got my Ignition 3.0 back in mid-April. Unlike the Ignition 2.0's I was really worried about how it took quite a while to get it to even look like it was being worn in let alone feel it. However, I was pretty pleased with the experience of the pad for quite a while. I had to use socks on the 2.0, this version 'required' we play barefoot. felt the difference immediately.
There were a few occasions where I had guests over, we'd all alternate between the two pads and the 3.0 just felt a lot better to use. It's with this pad that I went from having difficulty with 9-10 footers (10-footers being impossible) to being able to AA 9 footers and actually pass a 10-footer or 3 ::gasp::
alas, after a few months (2 months of near-daily extrenuous play (from 175lbs to 15x), 2 months of sporadic play) it started showing signs of wear. the down arrow felt stale in comparison to the other arrows. by the 4th month, a few weeks ago, the surface had began to rip (tape would come off and when it didn't it would create room for a new friend) and when the ghosting started I just got fed up. It's under a replacement plan so why bother going through the process of fixing it right?
lol none of the best buys seem to have it in stock, too lazy to mail it in to get it replaced =|
i'll get it replaced eventually and then probably give it away to someone.
to be honest if i didnt have the replacement plan (and a decent job) i would actually show some concern for fixing it up myself.
i put in an order for the BNS DX Xtreme pads on the weekend, they'll arrive by Friday D:
incentive for being so indulgent is also to see if there are foam pads out there that can both have a comfortable feel for all as well as take the beating of a pseudo-commercial environment, i.e. a college anime club.
To sum:
If you're not playing heavily, i.e. on higher difficulties, then you can take your chances with this pad (esp. if you catch it on such a great sale). If it's in great shape out the box you'll enjoy it for a while.
I'm sure having knowledge of how to fix it will come in more than handy for quality gameplay issues, but it's pretty ridiculous having the surface rip open on me mid-game. I've never had to deal with anything like that on other foam pads (generic foam pads and RO Ignition 2.0s).
If you're a serious or experienced player I would hesitate to purchase this pad.
I'll post about my experience with the BNS fusion/sparkle when I get em |

I'm sorry for anyone who is having problems with RedOctane Ignition 3.0 pads but my experience has been the polar opposite. (I bought it in one of the orange/black boxes from BestBuy when they actually had some in stock)
I've had my pad for almost two years now. I can AA anything 8 foot or below and AAA anything 7 foot or below, with few exceptions. I can pass most 9 foot songs and I occasionally pass a 10 foot song (though very rarely).
My pad has worked perfectly with my Playstation2 and also with my PC in both Windows and Linux. I didn't have to install anything special to get it to work. It just worked out-of-the-box. All I had to do was map each arrow to in-game controls. I don't have an XBox but have no doubt it would work just as flawlessly there.
My pad has never significantly slid on the carpet (it moves very minor amounts if at all and is easily adjusted between songs) and it doesn't feel sticky when I use my bare feet or slippery when I use socks with it. It just feels normal.
It cushions my feet.
No part of the pad has ever torn. All arrows function correctly most of the time. Pad misses are rare. (I'd say the pad might miss once out of every 30 songs played or so, if even that). Even then it usually works to just lay off for the rest of the day and it is fine the next.
That I am AAAing songs with it should be testimony to the quality of this pad.
I've never had to do any sort of fixing whatsoever.
It allows for quicker movement than is possible on an arcade machine. This can be seen as good or bad, depending on your views.
I have never had any problems with the corner arrows acting up as I play. Maybe that is just my play style though. I never disable corner arrows and never had a problem caused by it either, in other words.
I think if you seriously limit who can play on the pad and you are careful not to be too rough with it in your play style, it can last a long time. It is well worth the money.
I am said to be a very soft-stepper and I minimize the height I jump on jumps. I only just tap everything. This is all that's necessary to register it. I think such a play style extends the life of the pad dramatically.
The pad I had before this one cost more money than it and it got so bad that all you would see was the song wheel scrolling and scrolling, or not. Also that other pad was not compatible with the PC. It didn't work flawlessly even when new. IMO, it was a cheaply-made Ignition wannabe.
For a home pad, I seriously think the RedOctane Ignition 3.0 is one of the better choices, if not the best choice! _________________

humanbeing-
how often do you play?
do you play 10+ footers?
i was extremely happy with it while it lasted. but i started playing pretty vigorously x_x
max300 was impossible for me in the first month of play. but before the pad gave way (4th month) i was able to pass it almost consistently (i have it on hardest difficulty settings). and towards end of 2nd month i was able to play it a few times in a row without hurting myself lol
i nearly passed it in the arcade once, though i had to use bar (i dunno how to use bar since i dont use it, nor do i play in arcades much at all, but man was it exciting) |

From my experience, I can say this pad suck as well.
I borrowed it from a friend (never really been used before, she said... she didn't like it) for a week. Played on it the first day, realized it was ghosting like heck, and stopped using it. _________________

It varies. There are times when I play it every day in the week. There are other times I may play it once or twice a week. When I play it, I usually play for at least 30 minutes but I've played for hours before.
On average I'd say two times a week, 40 minutes to an hour each time.
I usually play songs in the 7 to 9 foot range. I'd say it's as likely for me to do 7 as it is 8 as it is 9. If I'm not doing as well as I expected, I'll step it down (7 foot or less) and work on accuracy. If I'm feeling mighty confident, I'll step it up and try a 10 foot song. Also if there are things I still need to unlock/complete/etc, then I will try them even though they are slower, for example, or I may do that to gain points so I can purchase things in in-game shops in, for example, Extreme2 although I usually play the courses to gain points for that (which may include songs of varying foot difficulty)
I would say I rarely play 10+ foot difficulty songs as it is rare for me to pass a 10 foot difficulty song and I've never passed anything greater than that (Yes I have In The Groove, so I can play songs greater than 10 foot difficulty. I just can't pass them).
I'd say I need to work on 9 foot songs for a while before I even start any of that.
A lot of it really depends on how much free time I have during the week.
Yeah, you don't want to play it viciously.
I guess all I can say to try to prolong the life of it is try to minimize the air-time you have (small hops instead of more forceful jumps), instead of pushing down hard try sliding your feet and pressing gently(can't do this at the arcade but it does increase footspeed a bit as well on a home pad) on the more difficult songs.
Also you don't want to transport the pad around too much. It's probably better if it can stay in one place for most of the time (or all of the time). Don't bend or fold it or stand it vertically. If you must, then take the foam pieces out and stack them gently and fold the rest of the pad for transportation or putting it away but I don't recommend this. It probably won't hurt it though; just be careful. It's probably best if you have something you can slide it under (like a big table that's out of the way) or such but you definitely do not want to put anything on top of it. Or just don't put it away; you could leave it out if it's okay with other people you live with or if you live by yourself and are okay with this.
Other than that I think it probably is a matter of luck. If you're lucky maybe you get a better pad than usual and if you're not lucky then sorry about that. Certainly how much you use it factors in to all this but I think as long as you are careful with it it can last a while. Like any pad, I'm sure it will die eventually. _________________

I bought my Ignition back in May, and I've been playing on it off an on throughout the summer. And recently it's been misfiring. A lot.
At first I though I just needed practice, but I get Marvelouses and Perfects 90% of the time, then a random almost or boo out of nowhere. I decided to test if it was me or the pad by stepping down to a Light song(coming from Heavy), and it was the same thing: Marv, marv, marv, marv, ALMOST, marv, MISS.
So, to fix it, I used some ducktape on the foam pieces to keep them in place while I played, assuming the misfires were coming from the foam hitting other sensors(or something like that). I recall someone else on this site doing the same, which worked for them, so I figured I'd give it a shot.
It only made it worse. I'm getting even more pad misses and misfires than I did before I added the ducktape!
It's starting to get on my nerves. And my warranty is up from EB(where I bought it), so I cannot return it. I could try for a complete exchange, although if it's something I could somehow fix myself, I'd do that first. Any ideas? _________________
