Hey, I've created a song called Healing Vision (Status Electro Mix). Now, I need to make the stepcharts - but wait! I suck. Can anyone give me any tips?

Just practice, practice, pracitce. That's the best thing you can do to make a good file. But there are a few things you should know.
1. Do NOT use the "record" feature that lets you add in steps while the song is playing. Instead, listen to a few measures of the song and then add steps for those measures. Go back and see if those measures were good and then move on.
2. Try to follow one part of the music--if you follow the percussion and the melody it won't make much sense, however if you just step one or the other it will probably turn out fine.
3. Kind of step things out as you do things on your computer. You can just move your feet while sitting and get a pretty good idea of how the file is going. Make sure you don't have to use the same foot twice in a row!
4. Just focus on one chart for now--whichever difficulty you usually play on. After you finish the chart, ask ALL of your friends what they think and tell them to be blunt. For now, you shouldn't care if people say "It sucked." No offense, but if you're new to this, it probably will suck for a while (and you admit so yourself). If you listen to people who tell you the truth and are blunt, you'll be able to see what you're doing wrong and fix it. Eventually, maybe after a few weeks, a few months, or even longer, you'll start to be able to know what works yourself and you won't have to depend on those other people.
5. Take your time--unless there's something you aren't telling us, this isn't a race. Don't worry about finishing your first file too fast, just take as long as you need to make it as good as you can.

Also, there's a lot of good threads here. The people in that forum can be a little rude, but they know what they're talking about. Just read through some of the stickies for tips. Try "The Ultimate Simfile FAQ" and "How to Resync a Song." Those both have a lot of good informatoin.
Good luck, and remember to just have fun. If you ever get to a point where this stops being fun, just stop and forget about it. If you personally don't enjoy making steps (which some people don't), there are plenty of people who would probably be willing to make steps for you. Have fun! |

| If you want the chart for this song to be good, don't do it yet. Instead, find some other songs to do first, because the first few you do are guaranteed to suck. It took me four tries to get something that was decent enough to show other people (other than close friends from whom I wanted criticism), and even then it wasn't too terribly great. So since you made this song, you probably want a great stepchart for it, so I'd say hold off for now and get used to step-making. |

| My first chart is on sync so far. I had my rudest friend critique it and he only had one stream that he felt was off beat. Still, I probably won't ever finish it. Maybe when I get some more time. I was trying to step a song by Oingo Boingo from Nothing to Fear. |
