|
|
I recently had a conversation with some friends at a DDR tournament about some of my good memories, and one that came to mind was from an incredible match at a tournament I hosted back in 2005.
This is a link to the closest match in DDR History. It is the final round of the 2005 Canadian Winter DDR Conference, Pickles vs. EvilPeer. Surely, you think, there could have been closer matches? This, however, wasn't a normal tournament as it was held on a Stepmania machine and the final round was a 28 minute edit made by Fo0by (maker of Ayu Trance and many others) specifically for this tournament. The end scores are only 1 point apart. (16,497 - 16,496)
The video I've linked to is about a 5 minute bit with the intro to the song, a few short clips from each person's playthrough, and then the announcement of the final scores. (And the reactions that followed)
I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. _________________

I've seen tournaments where there are overall DP ties before, and sometimes even ties on tiebreakers on tied rounds. I've run a lot...I mean a LOT of tournaments in my time playing DDR/ITG, I've seen a lot of weird things like...getting colors three times in a row on random, but I haven't seen anything that compares to this, ever.
Even after you tie on a round, if you've got a normal tournament running where you want to have a winner, then there's tiebreakers and really, for that to add up to as close of a match as this the tiebreakers would have to go on for another 23 minutes of gameplay or so, so I don't really find your counter-claim compelling. (Especially given that I've seen that sort of thing happen myself and, in my opinion it simply does not compare to this)

The only way for Pickles to improve is to be beaten once in a while...you have to kind of understand how the guy works to know what was needed, and I think that this might have been an example of EvilPeer at his best beating Pickles at his worst, perhaps? But either way, EvilPeer deserved that all the way. (Ok, even I've beaten Pickles at a couple of songs, every once in a while, he's not a God!)
Though...if you want to see another close match with Pickles in it, I think there's a video from Remember September or something that was in Toronto last year and it was Lil Q vs. Pickles on Mythology and Lil Q quad-starred it and Pickles got 4 excellents, I think. I think the rest of the match was really close too. I thought about going to that tournament and I kind of regret not going, but I'm now living in a city without ITG 2, so I would have gotten owned very badly... _________________

I would have enjoyed it more if the video showed the audience's faces and went on longer. XP |

Here's the closest match I've ever seen...very entertaining. The amazing thing is, it's on Vertex^2:

The V^2 one is pretty crazy, but not as crazy as the first one.
Crono, I was actually joking about that. But there are a lot of close matches when you get some good enough players. Obviously, it's nothing next to a 1 point difference on a 4000 max combo chart though. _________________

maybe not the closest match, but pretty fucking amazing. ddr finals at rocky mount 8.
LoM kevbo v bluemystic - 0g to 2g
PSMH kevbo v bluemystic - 2g to 0g
double elim with kevin in the losers, first match best two of three: (kevin then mike)
LoM - 0 to 2
Burning Heat - 5 to 8
second match best three of five: (kevin then mike)
On the Jazz - 3 to 0
Max 300 - 3 to 2
PSMH - 2 to 0
kevin had a total of 13 greats, to mystic's total of 12. on five songs (3 ten footers). ridiculous.

My apologies for the time it's taken me to reply properly, I just don't check ddrfreak enough these days. (mods don't kill me, please)
iGalaxy: Unfortunately the person who had the real video camera during those finals never uploaded the tapes, so what you have is a compilation of the clips from someone's digital camera that will only record 1-minute clips. Pretty ghetto, eh? At least we got something of it. And...by the way, as far as what's really worth seeing with that song...the thing most worth it is actually trying the stepfile yourself...it's just like this total trance you go into like nothing you've ever experienced...totally weird playing a 28-minute song...
Syxx: You like how we sound, eh?
dj DEW: I kind of feel sorry for Pickles, he lives in a city that doesn't even have a working ITG 2 now, and even when they did it wasn't very reliable. He still came 2nd at the ITG conference this year, without even playing a game for like...4 months. Not bad. (He was up against another really good player, Adrian, not sure what he is on GS, but he's obviously still pretty good to beat Pickles even out of practice)
SoymilkCharlie: Oops, I guess I didn't pick up on the sarcasm there, sorry. (It's more like a 6800 max combo too, I believe)
flotastic: That would have been something to see, I love how the worst scores by far are on Burning Heat. I've only heard secondhand about some american tournaments from people who went to NAT '05 and that one New York tournament where it was Pickles vs. The Reflex in the final round. I know there were some really good matchups there too. (Oh, and there was Remember September in Toronto where Lil Q quad starred Mythology vs. Pickles' 4 exellents...that was pretty intense from what I heard, even if it wasn't as close) You still playing ITG these days?
Tenchi50: Feel free to! I've always thought the standard DP system was a little too harsh for misses/boos when most of the focus, realistically, is on PA. _________________

They also look pretty tired in that, I'd be willing to bet they can do a little better playing fresh. That's always the disappointing thing about finals, usually people don't want to play the hard 12s/13s, or if they do they really don't perform to their full potential. _________________
