Hey, I've been looking into getting some better DDR shoes. I currently use new balance 504, but I've never liked them since I started using them about 5 or 6 months ago. So, I'm looking for a new pair, but I have no idea what would be good. I've been told Pumas or the new Nike type of shoes, but, I want more than the opinion of 2 people. Also I need a shoe company that makes size 14 shoes (I have big feet), and are light...the ones I use now feel too heavy, and my last pair of shoes for DDR are all but dead and aren't made anymore. _________________

I use éS Square Ones. Even though they are designed for skateboarding, they work wonderfully for DDR. They are very light, and are comfy too. They do have it in size 14 on Zappos.com. Just watch out for the skater kids, they'll come out of nowhere and call you a "poser" if you don't skate. I know this from personal experience.
Another shoe I would recommend is the Etnies Callicut. While not as good as éS shoes, they are still pretty damn good. |

Ok, never worn a pair of skating shoes, but it is a possibility, I hate to ask this, I hear things about Nike Frees (I know someone else uses them) but I'm not sure where to look for these, do you know which ones Adam Styles or little Q wear, since they're the top players, I imagine the shoes have something to do with it. I'm trying to do a lot of looking before I buy. _________________

If you use your toes much you may do better in skate shoes than in running shoes. Running shoes are cushioned for running where most the force seems to be applied to the heal. Most DDR players seem to apply a lot more force to their toes than a runner would. I've tried DDR in both skate shoes and running shoes and while my running shoes were a bit lighter (which is nice, probably need lighter skate shoes) my toes started to feel the pain of the reduced cushion in the running shoes. |

Most DDR players apply just as much force to the heel, actually. _________________

My biggest gripe with running shoes is the curved toe, are there any that don't have the curved toe, or not as much as my new balances? _________________

I bought a pair of Nike Free Trainers a while back and used them for a few months.
Then I went to the arcade last week and was lazy and wore my normal everyday ones, my Sneaux skate shoes.
And it turns out I play a whole hell of a lot better in the Sneaux than I do in the Nike's.
This annoys me because I wasted money on really high end running shoes.
So now I'll have to take up running to make it worthwhile. _________________

I thought with running you're supposed to toe heel, otherwise you get shin splints or something like that. Maybe I'm wrong...but thats what I thought. _________________

I meant that the best DDR players typically flatfoot, which is basically what it sounds like: the foot landing flat on the pad as opposed to playing on toes. _________________

Hi guys I'm a marathon runner.
For best results for long-distance running, you should gently roll your foot onto the ground after each step, then propel yourself at a 45° angle from the ground forward as your foot rolls to the ball of your foot. Done properly, this will significantly improve your airtime, speed, balance, endurance, and form.
Just so you guys know, there's surprisingly little relation between DDR and running, except that they both build your quads and calves. Even endurance doesn't transfer.
A year ago, I could run 10 miles without stopping, but I hardly had the endurance to clear 8's on DDR without passing out. Now, I can only run 5 miles without stopping, and 10's never have me down for more than a minute. _________________

Yeah, I figured running and DDR were almost completely unrelated. I've done a lot of both. |

Uphill biking, however, does directly related to the same motions as DDR uses.
There's a hill where I live that's 1 mile at 35 degrees from horizontal. I can make it about 7/8 up it most days before getting off an walking. I've made it all the way up it and the following 1/2 mile of more gentle slope once; I felt proud. . . and tired. _________________

Bump.
I now usually use these.
They work as good as, if not better than, my éS Square Ones. |
