just wondering, wouldn't a titanium pad be really heavy?

EDIT: oh wait...that's what we want =)

I'm quite interested in this, although shipping to canada will be a big pain..

Actually, titanium's only a bit heavier than steel, somewhat more expensive, reflects light WAY better, and is, duh, much stronger. ^^

Actually there seems to be a lot of you guys in the Toronto area; how many of you have experience building pads?

Wouldn't it be easier (not to mention getting another figure of dollar out of your price) if you incorporated the building and construction cost of your controllers into the final price rather than to bill customers for construction? I work with an ASC manufacturer and know that most people would rather see a $200 tag than a $90 + $60 construction + $20 customization +$20 handling/packaging + $10 builder pizza cost price tag.

just my .002 dollars...err.002 cents...damn, I should have never worked for Verizon...

The tag is a single figure, when shopping, but at this point, we're more concerned with making people feel like they aren't about to get ripped off.

The process will become completely optional after we've sold 10 pads with good public feedback.

erm, I think you're confusing titanium with something else. Stainless steel maybe? E19.gif Titanium is twice as heavy as aluminum / half as heavy as steel, slightly weaker than steel, and costs about a bazillion times as much. I've heard that titanium is a nightmare to work with, but i've never tried myself.

www.mcmaster.com sells titanium sheets starting at $60 per square foot, and high strength titanium for $200 per square foot. (Search for "page 3568" for prices). Maybe you know a dealer, but still I cant imagine it gets cheap enough to compete with steel.

I always thought it would be cool to make a pad with carbon fiber plates instead of steel, but that's also crazy expensive (page 3493) disgust.gif

Really?

Wow, I was misinformed. =(

Okay, no titanium; y'all get tinted chrome 16ga. steel. (teh shiz)

I'm in the Toronto area also, and I have absolutely no experience building pads or working with wires or anything. I would have had trouble building a simple PVC pipe bar if I didn't have anyone to build it for me. XD

So yeah, for a DT-500 (most expensive/durable/yeah =D) with EVERYTHING that I want + shipping, could you give me a rough estimate of how much it would cost? =\ Or any idea actually. E10.gif

Well, let me see if Lowe's has all their lumber prices on their website, and if they do, I should be able to just calculate it now.

You seem like you'd be good at building DDR pads though, you should give it a shot.
Maybe you'd even be able to get your CF working.

I used to think I'd be terrible at it too, just because I sucked at wiring, but I discovered that they can actually be made very simple, so really all the technical design is in sensors, and occasionally circuit boards if you want to have a really nice pad.

I'll always be a cheap bastard; it's in my genetics. biggrin.gif

@ EBT: Well, you actually can help. Ever tried building a DDR pad?
Big locations where we want distributors right now are Ontario, SW US, and SE US.
Steve and I can cover BC, Northern California, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho.
Oh yeah, someone in Hawaii would be nice too.
I'm sort of neglecting everywhere but Canada and the US for now, but we'll try to get more distributors as we get more popular. =)
I can send you a Distributor's Guide if you want. It covers everything you can and should do as a distributor, although it's kind of lacking in some areas while I'm still learning about all the legalities of private businesses.

Titanium pads... The cheapest place I've ever gotten titanium from is eBay. I build combat robots, but i will tell you now, 6al-4v(the strong stuff) is a complete pain to work with. The only way you can drill it is with cobalt or zirconium bits+ lots and lots of lubrication. I've broken several bits drilling through .032" stuff. Makes awesome white sparks if you hit it with a kinetic weapon, though. E10.gif

I actually already have that covered. E15.gif

But thanks anyway!
I'll make them downloadable from the site, when we make it.

Speaking of, who all wants to help me make the site?
Like, this week.
