I love DDR with everything I've got. It's one of the best games ever made. I'm glad to be a part of what's keeping it alive today by playing it all the time, every day, at the arcade and at home, and by trying to get my friends to do the same.

But it's not a sport. Sorry.

DDR is not a sport.

Online petitions are the biggest joke on the Internet.

DDR can't be a sport for the same reason Yu-Gi-Oh can't be be a sport. The game in it's entirity belongs to Konami. There is a benefit to the dance gamer to get everybody play the exact same songlist with a limited number of step charts, but that effort is put forth soley by Konami. It's their effort and not ours so DDR can't be a sport.

Dancing gaming itself can be a sport though. Stepmania a free open source program allows any and all possibilities to put your very own custom set up to your exact liking.

But in order to promote this idea I create Stepmania gatherings. As long as the idea of a dance game being a sport is a reality I really don't care enough to make an online petition.

Have fun with DDR and don't care too much what other people think.

Damn, why kind of DDR Freaks are you guys?

If you go with the dictionary definition of "sport" you'll get this:

- An athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

Does DDR fit the description? Easily. If you go down that linked page, there's some other things that may qualify:

- An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.

Rules, like the one's we use for tournaments, DDR can most certainly be considered a sport, it's just not widely recognized publicly as one.

In that case, let's make Pop'n Music a sport too! Level 40+ songs on an arcade machine require a hell of a lot of effort and often use your whole arm. And Pop'n tournements happen, too. It's a sport!

This thread is for DDR geeks who want to play in their PE class. It's a video game, not a sport.

I'm sure if it was sold for profit, Konami would clamp down on it (I'm sure it's a matter of time before they clamp down on ITG).[/quote]

I think DDR can already be considered a sport.... However, If your trying to say that we should have some proffesional DDR League or somthing, that cant happen, pretty much for the reasons that Daniel wrote.

Ironically tho, our Elementary Schools in our District are gonna buy DDR Machines for the PE Classes....

DDR in the ways most of us know it sure could be a sport. However, so is Midget tossing, pole vaulting... you get the jist. Sports, just too obscure to be of notice. It's one thing to call it a sport (which DDR is, to some extent). It's another to try to elevate it to the status of, say, Football, Baseball, or even Bowling. I doubt that a game of this sort would be a notable sport for the Olympic committee to take much notice of.

Have fun, and if it becomes a sport, great. If not, then we lose nothing.

I'm pretty sure a sport can't be owned by a company.

Does the Olympic committee even determine what an "official American sport" is anyway? What IS an "official American sport?" Why would a petition do anything about whether DDR fits the definition of an "official American sport?"

DDR is a sport in pretty much the same way that anything on ESPN2 at 4 in the morning is a sport. World Juggling Championships GO!
