Thanks cheesecake!
My problem is that I KNOW the rhythmns, just when I do them I get lots of goods/greats, making my PA almost nil. I've tried assist tick before (same as handclaps, right?) and it didnt help me much. _________________

Go to training mode and use the assist tick. You can then follow the rhythm of the steps. I also recommend going to an arcade just to watch good people. I would just watch people at the arcade and it taught me rhythms on certain songs, techniques and more.

I went straight from B'ing sakura to C'ing Maxx unlimited. From what I can tell, this is a huge jump. Is it really? I ask this because I never really noticed much change in my skill. |
Personally, I don't think this is a huge jump. Some people are just naturally better at timing and others are just naturally better at stamina. You probably just have a natural talent for stamina and your timing could just use some work (opposite from meh). |
I used to suck at PA/FA but able to pass hard crap like Max300, Xuxa, Robotix Expert all no bar, , but I've improved significantly the past three weeks by going back to standard/medium mode and playing everything on 1x (or 1.5x for ITG). Doing this has helped me keep my rythm and reading. Now I can pass harder songs with ease. I'd do standard on 1x for about two weeks at least, and do some 9s and 10s on the speed mods you like when you know your going to stop playing. You'll see the difference fast. It also helps if you don't take ANY breaks inbetween songs. The second your done with one, if its not at least an A or AA, play it again immiadiatly. If it is, then scroll down to the next song and play that to death, even if you don't like it. I've gone from struggling to getting a PASS on Max300 (for PA reasons) and various ITG 10 footers to passing them with ease now, and decent scores in the B~A+ range. Haven't got the AA on 9+ yet, but I'm working on it. Hope this helps. _________________

Things I need help working on:
SOME gallops.
And those triple notes on one arrow that come at you really fast.
Paranoia(180) is a good example of this. I do so damn fine until I get to the intro to the ending of the song where you go
Ururrr, etc. I end up losing my bar there.>_> _________________

Since I have the crappy Ultramix 3, I only get to practice on like 2 good songs: Sakura and the Legend of MAX. I can't clear either of them in the arcade. I can get Bs-Cs at home, but I still feel like I'm missing a lot. THe main things that get me are reading and stamina. How should I go about improving those? _________________

do you wear shoes at home and own a metal mat? If not, try practicing at the arcade a bunch, and just start out on easier songs and work up to the 10's.
Also, Sakura and LoM are WAY different in their difficulty, so just try to pass Sakura first, then work your way up to LoM trying Max 300 and Maxx unlimited, also PS and PSM. |

Yeh, metal pad I wish. I'm staring at about $3 of leftover tokens from yesterday's arcade trip, but my arcade is pretty crowded. LoM is definately harder for me, but I get just about the same grade as I do on Sakura... _________________

prolly because it's an Ultramix. When I owned an xbox I got U2 and I was passing things on there wayyy before I was ready, mainly because the life bar gains life back wayyy faster and drops life way slower. You just gotta get used to the arcade I guess. The crowd probably makes you do worse too, and definatly the fact of the arrows being sunk in there, vs playing on a flat surface at home.
The more you go to the arcade, the better you will get. I guarentee it. Just play some easier songs, some 9's and stuff and work up to 10's. |

Yeah, I've known for a while that Ultramix sucks balls. Ill just have to swallow my pride and do the arcade more often...even though I hate embarassing myself by getting Ds on bag.
EDIT: Is there any way to adjust the bar rate on Ultramix? I've looked for that option before and can't find it. _________________

I don't think so..........=/ I ended up selling my xbox for a ps2 just for that reason. Some people call me dumb for doing it, since I sold an xbox I bought new for a USED ps2, but I haven't regretted it in the least. |

...Wouldn't that make your Xbox used?
Anyways, I would buy a PS2 but I'd prolly look rl stoopid buying one with PS3 around the corner. My major plan is for when we replace this computer, to turn this computer into a ddr machine and put Stepmania on it and a couple metal pads. I've been passing the time loading my favorites onto it right now, like LoM, PARANOiA ETERNAL, and A. Course, I can't do much right now without a USB pad or a sound card for that matter. _________________

If you have an xbox pad it's really simple to build an xbox to usb converter, since xbox is just a fancy usb. You could concievably find out how to do it by searching online, a (very) quick search on google turned up nothing, but I'm pretty sure that I found out how to online, or I could easily whip up a guide for you. It's super easy if you have any experience at all soldering.
You wouldn't be able to run a cobalt flux through it, but you could play the songs you liked at home. |

Even if it seems like all you're doing is beating your head against a wall, I'm finding that just attempting, time after time, those songs that I can't get is really helping me get up my stamina, and I'm getting farther and farther into the song each time. If Sakura's giving you a rough time, just keep trying. I have EX2 for PS2, and on Heavy I played Sakura seven times in a row just because I wanted an A (I drank a lot of water that night...). I got there. And now this stubborn tactic is getting me really close to passing PARANOiA Survivor on Heavy, which is a major goal for me right now. If you push yourself towards it, you can get there. Keep workin at it! _________________

Anyone have any good suggestions for songs to play to help me get more used to those triple and quadruple notes?
I use leading cyber on standard but I could really use some help getting used to:
DDD, UUUU, URUURUUUU,etc...
I saw someone once who was going to hit it on heavy and he was just dropping his heel down so fast when he was choosing the difficulty. I need to learn control like that. Especially for songs like Paranoia.
I think I'm gonna start using abyss for it, hmm...

abyss is a really good practice song for steps like that. i dont know what level youre on but CSFILSM has steps like that too where its just the up arrow like 9 times in a row. theres also orion.78 am-euro mix but that song may be a bit too slow for what youre working towards. electro tuned would also be a good choice to work on those steps as well. soo have fun and ood luck!
one thing thats bothering me is my PA (as with a ton of other people in this thread). on slower songs like gambol or cutie chaser, i tend to count out the beat which helps me get my great count down to the lower to mid teens. but on faster songs like tsugaru or even twinbee, i have trouble PAing them in arcades so i never get a AA. i know part of this is due to the fact that i play on a foam pad and play my home versions way more than arcade (so the timing window is bigger) but is there any other way or me to improve my PA at home so that i'd get at lease a few AAs at the arcade? _________________

lets see, tipps to improve
i just wanna tell you guys that are starting out, or been playin for a while and still have heaps of room for improvement, the guys and girls that are thrashing everyone's buttocks's, they all had to suck at the start too =].
its the same in everything, everyone has to learn how to drive, spell, read, write. =]
if ppl bag you guys out, just ignore it =] its ur dollar (or two in some cases) and you spend it how you wanna, just have fun while ur doin so.
what i used to do to get better, turn ur fail gauge off for the hard songs,
cuz i didnt have ddr at home (im from syd, aust folks, no ddr here =]) -
i'd turn on step mania on my comp, blast on the music so nothing else disturbed me, have ur bottle of water (or coke or watever) near by.
rest against the arms of my comp chair for the faster songs, otherwise sticky tape my floor with duck tape so i knew where the arrows were, and play. no one's there to judge ya =]
even if u stumble, u can play the song over and over.
with stepcharts avaible on ddrfreak.com, u can jus look at the steps closely, and see how u ca develope ur own style of stepping - which hopefully will b smooth and what not =]
when u go to arcades, as ur last song do something u dont reckon u'd last in. gradually after practice u also notice ur progress. u finish it a little further than last time.
this method i used to used help me do 'exotic ethnic on heavy'
even to improve on how to free style, this method can be used to.
(but try not to think of it as a methodology - jus chillax man =])
although i dont use this method to practice songs anymore, i do know that this'll help you guys out - iv mentioned this to my friend (tone boi) out there about it and he practices and looks just as lame as me playin on duct tape - but if you progess at the arcade, lol you aint gonna complain.
peace out guys (hope that wasnt tooo confusing)

I've hit a rather sizable brick wall named FaxX Heavy...I can clear it on song speed 3 with an 'A' but full speed I make it to right where the first slowdown is and die. x_x
Yes yes I hear you all saying now to keep practicing and I know that, I keep whoring the song out but I'm not seeming to get anywhere. Any help or advice would be appreciated. *bows* _________________

From the main menu: go to options -- game options -- difficulty. A warning though, at the hardest level you will fail a song on 4 consecutive misses. _________________

I have a problem with stepping crossovers at the arcade, especially things like EE and Afronova Primeval. I always slip around on the buttons and lose my balance. I can read them and do them in SM just fine. Do I need new shoes? |
