all i've got is the soft pad that came with my mario mix (with a gcn->usb adaptor so i can play stepmania), and i like it just fine. my friends all complain about theirs and are saving money to get metal ones. am i the only one who is fine with soft pads? |

I liked (good, meaning NOT mad catz) softpads until I played at the arcade and experienced metal pads for the first time. I still only play on a RO3, but I would love a metal pad. It really depends on how you play...if you're playing on Light or Standard, you don't really need a metal pad. _________________

I liked my RO Ignitions...until they broke (only took a couple of weeks). _________________

I'm cool with soft pads. I still play on my official itg soft pad (modded, of course). I have had my pad for about 8 months now and still nothing bad has ever happened to it (no phantom steps nor broken pad sensors, yet...). _________________

personally, i think foam pads are okay up to around 8 or 9 footers (then they fly all over the place)
and non-foam softpads are just not suitable for anything after trick (standard) mode |

I personally think softpads are the bane of human existance and should not exist... but... Theyre hella cheap so theyre good for beginners. What skill level are you that softpads are still fine?
Depending on what mix you have... Play Drop Out on Heavy and tell me it's possible on a softpad. Legend of Max on Std/Heavy also has a big area of jumps. Love Love Shine heavy has a slowr, but constant flow of jumps. Tell me you can do any of these songs without having the pad move to an intolerable level. |

Depends on your motive. If you're hardcore and want to compete at tournaments then of course you'd want a metal pad. Soft pads are good enough for just working out, which is what I use. I don't see the reason why we need the real arcade experience... at home. Just go to an arcade! |

I dunno. I wouldn't consider myself hardcore or anything, but I hated my soft pad, even when I was a beginer. |

Metal pads are probably for people that want to get combos, perfects or marvelous. For me I just play but still aim for those, however I wouldn't blame my pad for screwing them up unless there is actually some problem. |

soft pads are definitely easier to dance on, because you dont have to lift your feet at all.

you must have had a peice of poopy softpad, I had no problems with those songs on my soft mat (which was the default one that came with UM3, which I believe is the same as the ones that come with Extreme for PS2). 3rd party softmats sucks imo, like madcatz. But konami softpads are good, the dont slide on a proper surface either. My only problem is I destroy them. Mine's held together by duct tape now (but still works). |

ok. drop out on heavy is easy on a soft pad. as are the rest of the things you listed. i've beaten max 300 heavy on it too (haven't tried unlimited or legend yet). my pad does move some, but my body always seems to subconsciously move with it (or vice versa?). it doesn't bug me at all. |

I played at the arcade before I actually got the home-game version... and soft pads are nothing campared to the arcade.
True, it would make sense to go to the arcade to play if u want the metal pad experience, but I'd rather not spend the money on that.
I would rather spend my money on a metal pad and have a good experience rather than break something when I get frustrated with the soft ones.
But.. that's just me. |

The structure of your argument tells me either one of two things: either you have never actually played on a soft pad or you just suck. OK, Drop Out Heavy is hella easy on a softpad (Personally , I can AAA it with my soft pad). Tell you what, this is what my soft pad goes through practically every day: I play Hardcore of the North, Euphoria, Delirium, Bloodrush, Determinator, Summer -Speedy Mix- expert and Fascination MaxX heavy with my soft pad and had no problems what so ever. I even take it up a notch and play Eggmans Quasar and Rage's Ub3r R4ve (stepmania keyboard songs, still haven't passed Ub3r R4ve on that pad yet ) on the pad and still my soft pad is in great condition. Long story short: I play stepmania everyday with my official itg soft pad and nothing bad has ever happened to it yet. I had it now for 8 months and counting.

Really? That's strange because a lot of people who play on soft pads can easily obtain the marvelous rating. Let me tell you something. Playing on a soft pad does not make the timing windows any harder. It is the exact same with a soft pad as with a metal pad. Yes, some people may get phantom steps with their soft pad, but guess what, that doesn't make getting a marvelous any harder on a soft pad than on a metal pad now does it.
Back on topic, soft pads can be very good, if you know how to take care of it, of course. If you are one of those people who wads/folds your soft pad and throws it into a corner, of course it won't last long. If you want a long lasting soft pad, just buy a piece of plywood and ductape your pad on to it. If anyone wants, I can go into more detail about how I modded my pad to make it last for so long. The point is that if you know how to take care of your soft pad, it wont suck. _________________

i was ok with soft pads until they started to move around. (then i modded it, and that worked ok)
then i tried my friends ignition 2.0 pad, and wanted that..(but didnt get one)
then i went to the arcade and wanted a metal pad..so i made one, and now i dont really play on it because my sensors keep messing up
as long as u really dont care about the score and all, soft pads are ok (especially if u mod it) _________________

My unmodded Konami softpad bunches up or moves whenever I play anything above even 5-6 feet. The jumping portion of drop out seriously might turn my pad a full 90 degrees. I take excellent care of all of my stuff. I don't get random ghost steps, but unmodded, I do get much worse timing.
My modded pads (2 Mad Catz pads mounted onto plywood) worked up until 8 footers. Disregarding the fact that playing in socks is basically an entirely different experience than shoes, my feet would kill after the run at the end of Drop Out, and I wouldn't be able to do something like Max 300 without getting blisters. I modded the pads to make a doubles stage more than to improve timing and durability (Ever try to play doubles on unmodded softpads? )
I don't even care about the "arcade feeling" and whatnot, but playing in shoes is the only way I can ever play DDR. _________________

I recently played ddr at a friends house. She had one of those softpads that you find at EB games. It was all folded up in its box for storage. I played on it, works great. (Couldn't do the 8th streams in drop out though). It moved, but nothing too serious. _________________
