Okay, this is going to be really funny (dumb).
But I've wanted to start with DDR for a long time. I have a dance background and I strongly suspect I'll get instantly obsessed.
Okay, the drawbacks: I don't have a player or even a TV.
I *do* have a handful of gift certs from Amazon.
I'm guessing I could get started with a PS2 for about $130, a red octane pad for about $80, and one of the DDR packs. I can output PS2 through my computer monitor, right?
Does that sound reasonable? |

Or you could just buy the pad and download StepMania. |

WOW, glad I asked! Thanks for your help!
Another question ... I was just about to pull the trigger at Amazon (stepmania's site recommends the RedOctane 3.0 pads) when I started reading the reviews.
The reviews for RO 3.0 are really pretty awful, and they say that if you try to order 2.0 (apparently a more durable product) you'll be shipped the 3.0 which is likely to break.
Any suggestions for a more reliable pad? |

Go with the official ITG pad and mod it. Itwill last longer than any of the ignitions. _________________

if you can get the buynshop.com foam insert pad through Amazon, that's a better deal. MUCH more reliable. |

YOu will also need an adapter.
Not all will work with stepmania or the pad.
Check out DDR SIMS forum. and Welcome to DDR Freak. |

also, look for pads in the bemani controllers section; there should be all the info you need to make a good decision about getting a decent pad |

Stepmania's website can help you with most of this. They have a long list of ps2>usb adapters. Do not buy an ignition pad. They work wonderfully for about... a month? But, you might look into one because you won't be putting the stress of an experienced player on it. It may be a worthy investment for you, because you won't ruin it as fast. You could save some money and use a plastic-y pad for a while. That would work for you fine until you hit standard, and if you still think it's a worthy investment, save up for a metal pad. _________________

Hey, I really appreciate the advice. This should get me started with a good pad. If I stick with it I'll get a metal one down the road; they look awesome. |
