I think my game pad wire got in the way of my dog's bone and he just chomped through the wire mid game.
So I figured I could just put solder the wires back together but its so close to that cylindrical object that I can't extend the wires. I'm curious what that is and if I can bypass it. Anybody know? Any suggestions?
I have gotten a new pad but I didn't wanna just throw away a perfectly good (the arrows and padding were working fine.) pad.
By the way it is a Red Octane Ignition 3.0 pad.

lol I love your dog <3
I think you could open the cylindrical object and see how it is made. That would give you more space to fix the problem |

I think that's what the OP wants to know. _________________

If it is what I think it is, it is called a "choke". Its purpose is to reduce interference. Sometimes they reduce RF interference with other devices, other times they reduce the impact that local fields have on the communications flowing through the cable. Since you're going to do a bang-up job of defeating its purpose anyway, by fixing up the wires, there is probably no harm in dropping it. (I wouldn't be surprsed if under some circumstances you got a few extra phantom presses, but they should be few and far between( |

It's a ferrite choke. It's purpose is to nullify stray signals that may be picked up by the wire. You should be able to pop it open easily enough. Once that's done you should be able to repair the wire and reinstall the choke. I wouldn't recommend leaving it off. Although there's a good chance nothing will happen, it's possible that you could get anything from reduced responsiveness, to spurious arrow presses. If for some reason you break it or otherwise can't reuse it, you can pick up a cheap (relatively speaking) one at Radio Shack.

They have no significant impact on interference with other devices.

By repairing the wires, he's probably going to introduce even more signal reflections and other bad stuff than was occuring previously. If he ever needed one before, he's going to need one even more now. |

Hi Sophos,
It has been a while since I had to do anything with RF circuitry, but I'm pretty sure the signal suppression works both ways, though both aren't usually required in the same application.
You are certainly right that his solder job is going to increase the noise in the line, which is the main point I was making. I'm not sure tying a knot around a ferrite ring from Radio Shack is going to do much more than attract even more attention from the dog, though...
In any case, I'll bow to your probably more-current knowledge... |
